Here’s what you and your kids need to know about AI

Published: 27th January 2023

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a hot topic in today’s world and it’s important for parents to understand its impact on their children’s education and future careers. In this blog, we discuss the benefits and challenges of AI in education, as well as its implications for the future of work.

What is AI?

The Alan Turing Institute, the UK’s national academy for AI, defines it as a machine performing tasks that would usually require human brainpower. Most artificial intelligence systems involve computers running algorithms to work through large amounts of data.

AI in Education

First and foremost, AI systems has potential to create personalized learning experiences for each student. This means that students can learn at their own pace, with the AI system adapting to their individual needs and abilities. Additionally, artificial intelligence can automate tasks such as grading and data analysis, freeing up teachers to focus on more important tasks.

However, there are also challenges to implementing artificial intelligence in education. Cost poses one of the main challenges. AI-based solutions can be expensive and require significant investment in hardware and software. Privacy and security pose another major challenge. This is due to AI systems requiring access to sensitive student data. Additionally, ensuring accurate results requires the quality of the data used to train artificial intelligence systems to be cleansed.

There are several potential uses of artificial intelligence in education. One is the use of AI-powered tools such as ChatGPT to assist with writing assignments. While some may be concerned that this could be a danger to education, others believe that using artificial intelligence for first drafts can help students fine-tune their work and improve their understanding of the technology. “I think we have to embrace it because it’s the future,” says Professor Rose Luckin.

Professor Rose Luckin’s comments

“This is the world of work that children will be going into. If they get a job where they need to generate text, they’re likely to be using an AI to help them. So what they need to know is how to frame the question to something like ChatGPT. This is because what you get back depends on how you ask the question. You then have to understand what’s missing from what the AI produces. The aim of this is to get a better understanding of it. The same goes for other AI tools that generate images or videos. This is something that is going to be part of our lives and we can’t run away from it. We need to help those, particularly teachers, who are going to be put in the position of needing to help young people to understand it. Hardly any teachers know anything about AI, and why would they? We can’t expect them to.”

AI in the Workplace

Artificial intelligence is also revolutionizing the way we work. AI-driven technologies automate manual tasks and free up employees to focus on more complex tasks. Additionally, Businesses use artificial intelligence to automate specific processes. For example, automating data analysis can save businesses time and money. Finally, artificial intelligence creates personalized experiences for customers. These include providing personalized recommendations based on customer preferences.

What do you think?

Elon Musk is a successful businessman and inventor. He’s known for creating companies like Tesla, SpaceX, and Neuralink. He works on some really cool things like electric cars, space travel, and brain-computer interfaces. He describes ChatGPT as “scary good”.

🤔 Do you think AI is more “scary”, or more “good”?
