First News interview Sugababes
Hear all about the Sugababes recent album and more in this interview.
Amelle: Yes, we’ve been busy.
Heidi: It’s been really good. We recorded the new album in the States early last year and Jade has now replaced Keisha’s vocals on the album.
Jade: In London, I didn’t get to go to LA. I can’t really complain though as I’ve had quite a lot of cool stuff happen since joining the Sugababes.
The new album has a really new sound. Did you try to change it, or has it just evolved?
Amelle: I think it was always evolving, really. I think every single album is different to the next. I mean, we get bored as well. Music is just constantly changing, so we like to move with it as well. When we went to LA, we were working with people who do Rihanna’s songs and albums, Ne-yo, Red One who does Lady Gaga. I mean these are the big boys of America and so even to have the opportunity to work with them was amazing. We’re so happy and proud of this album, it’s unbelievable.
This album is the Sugababes seventh. How is it for you joining the band Jade?
Jade: It’s extremely exciting. For me it’s the first time for everything. It’s the first time I’m going to see our album, or see a big poster somewhere. All of these things are the kind of things you dream about. It’s like I was always trying to climb this mountain but, now I’m actually doing it, it’s really strange. I’m like: “Now what’s next?”.
Heidi: It’s exciting because it‘s a new start for us as well. She does make us more excited about things. When Jade sees them and experiences them, it’s like doing it for the first time again.
A lot of your recent videos are quite futuristic. Has that been a lot of fun?
Heidi: We love different ideas. For us, the more experimental the better. We love the new video.
Jade: It’s so cool! On the day we were filming it we just couldn’t picture what it was going to be like. We were literally in a room and had to imagine that there’s going to be clones of you – a sea of Sugababes and you’re just like: “Oh how are they going to do this?” When you see it back it’s really amazing.
Amelle: We look really cute when we were walking up to the camera because we’re so tiny. It’s like we’re ants. The video is wicked. It’s odd seeing so many of us but it’s cool.
Do you ever get bored of making videos?
Heidi: How can you get bored of videos? They’re so exciting! I mean you get bored towards the end of the day because
it seems to drag on forever, but you’re
also excited.
Jade: Especially on the shoot for Wear My Kiss. Because it was futuristic we got to wear these unusual clothes and have crazy hair.
It’s like getting to be another person for
the day.
Do you have a favourite Sugababes video?
Amelle: Yes. Denial, for me is one my favourites.
Heidi: Yes, and Round Round for me, just because it was so different to what anyone had done at the time. It was only my second video and I just thought it was amazing. There were quite a few people who tried to copy a lot of elements of it, so it was really flattering.
A lot of young fans look up to you. How do you feel about that?
Heidi: It feels like a responsibility when you’re around young girls. You don’t think about it all the time though. Everyone is going to make mistakes at some point but, definitely, when I am around kids I do watch my language!
Amelle: You’ve got to be yourself. We love kids so, when we’re around them, we take our time and try to sign everything put in front of us or pose for pictures because, if I were a kid, I would absolutely love that.
What advice would you give to kids who want to follow in your footsteps?
Amelle: The best advice would be to be yourself and don’t feel like you have to be part of the crowd. If you genuinely want to be a singer, or an actress, you have to work really hard at it. And you will be knocked back. Your confidence will go up and down. One person will think you’re amazing, another won’t think you’re any good. The best way is to just keep trying. We’ve all had lots of knockbacks and you just have to keep going. If you truly believe you can do it, and want to do it, you’ll get there.
