DNA tests conducted on girl thought to be Madeline McCann

A girl in India has been DNA tested to see if she is missing child Madeline McCann

A British tourist has claimed that she has found missing girl Madeline McCann while on holiday in Leh in India.

She said that the young girl, who was accompanied by a Belgian man and a French woman who said that she was her daughter, looked exactly like missing Madeline and called the police.

Copies of the couple's passports were taken and DNA swabs were taken from the girl.

A spokesman for Leh police told local media: “It all depends upon the evidence like DNA for which help from Madeleine's parents and the British police was required.”

However, Madeline's parents Kate and Gerry McCann do not believe that it is her. A spokesman for the McCann’s said: "Kate and Gerry do not believe the child seen in India was Madeleine. They have seen photographic evidence and concluded that it was not her.

"We remain grateful for people's vigilance around the world. Madeleine is still out there and the search for her very much continues."

Madeline McCann went missing while on holiday in Portugal with her parents and twin silbings five years ago.

She was taken from her parents' holiday apartment after they left her and her younger brother and sister there to sleep while they had dinner nearby with friends.

The case remains a mystery because the police do not have any real suspects.

Madeline was three-years-old when she was taken and would be eight-years-old now.

I don't acsurely know what she looked like when she whent missing because I'm the same age as her. my twin sisters name is Madeline aswell. Why did her parents leave her and her twin siblings on there own?

  • nwilliams wrote on Friday, 29 July 2011 @ 13:13

Well, her parents thought that because they were so close by that the children would be safe - and they were checking on them regularly. No-one knows if she was taken or if she wandered off by herself.

  • woolrychi (Age 14) wrote on Saturday, 30 July 2011 @ 16:47

the picture above is Maddie but it is a picture from when she was 4, before she was taken. I've looked and although there are images of what maddie MIGHT look like now on the internet, there are no pictures of the girl that the British tourist THOUGHT might be Maddie, as far as I can tell anyway. I really hope, for her parents sake that she gets found eventually. x

  • looby99 (Age 12) wrote on Saturday, 6 August 2011 @ 20:44

  • greenmango (Age 12) wrote on Sunday, 7 August 2011 @ 09:42

There are some police interpretations of what she may look like on the internet at the moment, on all the main newspaper web-sites. Check them out! It's actually a pretty good guess of what she may look like. I really hope she is found! I hate it when people go missing. I got lost on the train once and I thought I wouldn't see my family ever again. Of course, I was sensible enough to have a look round and find my family buying tickets. D'oh!

  • AquaPuppy (Age 11) wrote on Sunday, 7 August 2011 @ 20:41

    That's the REAL Madeleine!

  • yachibobo (Age 12) wrote on Sunday, 7 August 2011 @ 21:24

They look alike, but surely she would look much older, as she looks very young in the picture.

  • myworld123 (Age 11) wrote on Sunday, 7 August 2011 @ 22:40

  • Historian8 (Age 11) wrote on Thursday, 25 August 2011 @ 10:05

  • redhorse10 (Age 14) wrote on Monday, 5 September 2011 @ 20:21

No, guys, there was a different picture of two girls, that's why we thought it was the India girl at first! It wasn't the one of the real Madeline which is there now. :)

  • vivk1 (Age 12) wrote on Thursday, 10 November 2011 @ 18:01

Wow! I feel so upset for Madeline and her parents.

  • Jack7701 (Age 9) wrote on Friday, 11 November 2011 @ 19:05

I remember when I was 4 it was all over the news about a girl who had been snatched away from their holiday home. The parents were very silly really and should have thought about what they should have done because if they went out you should ALWAYS have a babysitter to look after your children! But still it is quite sad about it.

  • DoggyWoggy (Age 9) wrote on Saturday, 19 November 2011 @ 20:06

ed12345 is right they do look alike but if her Mum and Dad don't think it is her then it obviosly isn't. xx
