Winner of the Junior Journo competition: Operation Christmas Child
Here is the winning article from the Junior Journo competition that First News recently featured in conjunction with Espresso Education. Carys’s article was selected from hundreds of entries and, after much discussion, the judges finally chose their winner. Everyone was very impressed with the thorough research and how a interview had been included within the article. Carys had also chosen a current subject for her report, which made our judges want to get involved.
This year the Christian charity, Samaritan’s Purse, is running Operation Christmas Child once again.
Since 1990, Samaritan’s Purse has collected shoeboxes full of small gifts for poor or needy children.
Then they are sent to places all over the world. Last year, almost 1.2 million children from 13 countries from across the world received a Christmas shoebox.
Many schools and churches are taking part in this worldwide event to put a smile on a child’s face.
An interview with Mrs Susan Roberts, one of the governors of a school that is taking part, shows that Operation Christmas Child is a popular charity project. “I think it is a brilliant idea”, Mrs Roberts says. “It is a chance for Christians to celebrate Christmas by sharing some of their wealth with those who don’t have as much.”
Don’t worry, you don’t need to be a Christian to send a shoebox. If you would like to make a child’s Christmas happy too, by giving a shoebox, you can make your donation. Find out more at www.operationchristmaschild.org.uk
