A British team has successfully set a new world land speed record for a lawn mower.

The Project Runningblade team set the new record of 141.353km/h (87.833mph) at Pendine Sands in the south-west of Wales. The previous record was 130.022km/h and was set by an American team in 2006.

The mower, which must still be capable of cutting grass to get the record, was driven by Don Wales. He is the grandson of Sir Malcolm Campbell and the nephew of Donald Campbell, who broke over 20 world land and water speed records between them. Sir Malcolm broke his first world record at Pendine Sands in 1924.

The team used a standard Kawasaki lawn mower engine in their design. Although they had hoped to break 100mph, they were still extremely proud of their achievement.

“We are delighted to have set this new world record,” said team principal Stephen Vokins. “It is a triumph of British engineering.”
