New dinosaur called 'thunder thighs'!

Category - Science

Bookmark and Share

A new species of dinosaur has been given the name ‘thunder thighs’ because of its powerful leg muscles.

The new species was among bones found in a quarry in Utah, USA. Writing in Acta Palaeontologica Polonica, the scientists describe how the creature’s huge ilium (hip bone) would have allowed very big muscles to attach to it. Its name, Brontomerus mcintoshi, comes from the Greek for ‘thunder,’  ‘thigh’ and John McIntosh, a respected dinosaur expert.

Brontomerus would have used its strong thighs to fight off rivals and possibly predators. Its front legs were also strong, leading experts to say that ‘thunder thighs’ was more athletic than other sauropods, such as Diplodocus or Brachiosaurus, and that its legs gave it a kind of “dinosaur four-wheel drive”.
