Tributes have been flooding in after the death of one of sport’s most-loved characters, Seve Ballesteros, who has died after a long battle with cancer.

Ballesteros was seen as a breath of fresh air in a sport that has often suffered from a dull image. His flair and remarkable recovery shots won him fans everywhere, and not just in the world of golf. His wayward drives would often leave his ball blocked by trees, in water or even in car parks, but Seve had an amazing knack of making par from anywhere.

The Spanish genius was credited with winning back crowds on the European Tour, as well as reviving interest in the Ryder Cup. In that event, Ballesteros and Jose Maria Olazabal were the most successful pairing ever. They played 15 matches together, winning 11, drawing two and losing just two. For such a competitive tournament, that is an outstanding record.

World No1 Lee Westwood said that he had lost “an inspiration, genius, role model, hero and friend”.
