Former England captain has cancer surgery

The former England and Manchester United captain Bryan Robson has had an operation for throat cancer in Thailand.

Robson is the coach of the Thai national football team and had the operation in Bangkok. He will need further treatment, but his doctor is sure that the cancer can be treated.

Robson joined Man Utd in 1981 for a record fee at the time of £1.5m. He is regarded as one of the best ever England players and scored 26 goals in 90 games for his country. Even though his career was dotted with many dreadful injuries, Robson also helped United to win three FA Cups, two Premier League titles and the 1991 European Cup Winners' Cup.

United later went on to win the final against Everton 1-0, in a match that became famous for featuring the cup final's first ever red card, after United's Kevin Moran was sent off.
