Meet Asa Butterfield and Chloё Grace Moretz, the teenage stars of the magical movie Hugo.

You must be incredibly proud of the film. How did you feel when you first saw it?

Asa: It was incredible. You act in it and you get the film from your point of view but, when you watch it, you see what the camera has been seeing and it’s a window into this universe. Chloё: It’s beautiful, especially when you see it in 3D, you see every detail. Asa’s eyes. Wow. They’re beautiful in person, which is the first compliment I’ve ever given him but, when you watch the movie, it’s ridiculous.

Did you hit it off straight away? It’s obvious you’re great friends?

Chloё: Yes, we were just nice to each other.

Asa: It was pretty instant and I think that does come across on the screen.

Chloё: I guess when you’re a normal teenager you can just talk to other people your age. I have four older brothers so I easily talk to boys because I am used to it.

The film set is pretty complicated. What was it like to work on it?

Asa: It was incredible. It was a masterpiece. It was the biggest set I’ve ever worked on by a long shot. It was spectacular. You would walk around the set and everything is so real 1930s. You could go in the library and it wasn’t full of fake books, it was real Parisian vintage books. There was nothing that could take you out of the character.

What kind of research did you do for the part?

Asa: I did lots of work with a magician, which was fun. I also learned lots about how to take apart watches, as there was lots of stuff like that I had to work on during the film.

Chloё: I just kept trying to get into the mindset of a 1930s kid. Trying to think about the fact that they spoke differently, acted differently, did different stuff. Every time they said cut we went back to our phones and laptops though!

There are lots of animals in the film. How was that?

Chloё: They were all really sweet. Asa got chased by them for the film, though. That was scary.

Asa: It was! The filmmakers convinced me that the dog was running from point A to point B and that I was just an obstacle in its way. That did nothing to relax me. I am sure they hid some bacon or something in the back pocket of my costume!

Catch Hugo in cinemas now.
