Farmer killed by pet hippo

A farmer has been killed by his pet hippo that he described as being 'like a son' to him.

Farmer Marius Els had raised Humphrey the hippo since he was five-months-old after he grew too big for his old owners to handle.

It's not known why the 1.2 tonne six-year-old hippo attacked and killed his owner.

Mr Els has previously said that Humphrey was a 'gentle giant' and had even built him a special pool.

"Humphrey's like a son to me, he's just like a human," he said. "There's a relationship between me and Humphrey and that's what some people don't understand.

"They think you can only have a relationship with dogs, cats and domestic animals. But I have a relationship with the most dangerous animal in Africa."
