A JEDI on its way to Jupiter
NASA's Juno spacecraft has successfully launched on its mission to Jupiter, taking a JEDI with it.
Unfortunately, this JEDI doesn’t have a cool outfit and a lightsaber, but it will reveal some fascinating details about the structure of our solar system’s largest planet.
The Jupiter Energetic-particle Detector Instrument, or JEDI, is one of the many important pieces of equipment on board Juno. JEDI will investigate how energetic particles interact with Jupiter’s magnetic field and atmosphere. These particles are accelerated to incredibly high energies, and Juno is the first craft to enter the area where this happens.
Don’t hold your breath for news, though – Juno won’t reach Jupiter for another five years.
