Do you think it’s a good idea to watch a favourite movie or show while being operated on?

Surgeons have discovered that giving their patients a movie or TV show to watch means they need less anaesthetic during operations.

Traditionally many operations have required the patient to have general anaesthetic which makes them go to sleep. There are some risks with this and it takes longer to recover. Using local anaesthetic, which numbs the area being operated on, is safer and the patient is awake the whole time. By playing a popular TV show or movie the patient is distracted enough to only need a local anaesthetic while the surgeons are carrying out their work. The patient listens to the TV through earphones so they can’t hear the sounds of the operating theatre and the TV is out of the way of the surgeons.

So far, 200 patients have watched TV while undergoing joint surgery.

What do you think? Do you think it’s a good idea to watch a favourite movie or show while being operated on?

Comments: It sounds good actually, because if you are worried, you may not think about the operation so much, and it will mean that you don't have to have loads of anaesthetic. This means they will be able to wake up earlier after the operation is done.
