Would you wear a spider silk scarf?

The golden scarf below is extremely rare – it is made entirely of spiders’ silk!

The scarf took an incredible seven years to make and is spun from the silk of more than a million golden orb spiders. The silk is naturally a golden colour and did not need to be dyed.

The spiders are found in the highlands of Madagascar. They are collected by trained handlers each day to be ‘silked’ and then released back into the wild.

According to experts, spiders’ silk has not been woven since 1900 and this is the largest piece of material to be produced in this way.

The scarf will be on display at the Victoria & Albert museum in London, along with a matching golden cape, from 25 January to 5 June.
