World's third smallest baby is sent home

The third smallest baby ever to be born has been sent home from hospital.

Melinda Star Guido was born 16 weeks early last August and weighed only 9.5 ounces. Less than a can of drink.

Melinda has spent five months in the intensive care unit, but was finally allowed to go home this week.

"I am so excited to finally have my baby come home," said her mother Haydee Ibarra.

"We have waited almost five months for this moment. It is so wonderful and we are ready to bring Melinda home."

Dr Rangasamy Ramanathan, one of Melinda's doctors, said that they didn't think that baby Melinda would live more than a few days: "This doesn't happen every day.

"In my 30 years here, ... this is the first time it ever happened."
