World's rarest stamp sells for £1.6 million

World's rarest stamp sells for £1.6 million

An extremely rare stamp, The Treskilling Yellow, has just fetched an incredible £1.6 million at auction – the most ever paid for a postage stamp.

The Treskilling Yellow stamp was snapped up by a group of telephone bidders, who called an auction house in Geneva, Switzerland. The identities of the callers have been kept a secret, however, so the public is unlikely to ever discover who are the owners of the pricey postage.

The sought-after stamp dates back to 1885 and is believed to be the only one of its kind still in existence. Its first documented owner was thought to be a Swedish schoolboy, who, in 1885, discovered the stamp in a pile of letters belonging to his grandparents.

The stamp itself has such an enoromous value because it is, in fact, a misprint. The Treskilling stamp was supposed to be green, but an error at the printers saw a few copies come out yellow instead.

In 1980, a 1856 British Guiana 1 cent Magenta stamp sold for almost $1 million, a record sale at the time. But now the Treskilling Yellow stamp has doubled that sale and broken the new world record for a stamp.

What do you think of this story? Do you think it's a good idea to spend money on stamps? Are they a good investment? Do you like stamps?
