World's largest solar station powers up

The world’s largest solar power station has begun producing energy for the first time.

The Andasol solar station, which is built on the Guadix Plateau in Andalusia, Spain, is as big as 210 football pitches. It contains an incredible 600,000 mirrors.

The Guadix Plateau is 1,100 metres above sea level, where the atmosphere is much clearer and less turbulent than at lower altitudes. This means that Andasol can capture lots of solar energy, especially as the site has more than 2,000 hours of sunlight every year.

It is hoped that the plant will show the benefits of renewable energy. However, there could be trouble maintaining solar energy projects in the future because of possible government cuts. Rainer Kistner, Andasol’s director, said: “Our plant shouldn’t be affected, but I’m worried about new projects.”

For now, Andasol is doing well and providing enough energy for a city of half a million people – that’s a lot of solar power!
