A 60-year-old grandmother won a recent battle with a shark, as she punched and kicked it to scare it off. The creature bit Paddy Trumbull while she was snorkelling off the Whitsunday Islands. The surgeon who treated her said that she had lost around 40% of her blood in the attack. Aussie
President Hugo Chávez is known for liking the sound of his own voice, and he now has a new way to get his views across to the people. A man was pulled out of rubble alive, 27 days after an earthquake devastated Haiti. Most people do not survive for more than a few days in similar situations. Evan Muncie had lost a lot of weight, and was so dehydrated that he had started to see things that weren’t there.
Campaigners are fighting to save the famous Hollywood sign in Los Angeles. The group is hoping to raise the £8 million that they need to buy the land around the sign. Otherwise, several large houses could be built there, and block the city’s view of the sign. Campaigners have covered the sign to make it say ‘save the peak’.
A police officer in Las Vegas had an unbelievable escape this week, when a bullet struck his badge instead of killing him. The officer was shot at when he tried to stop a suspect, but suffered only minor injuries during the gunfight. Police are currently searching for the gunman.
A Ukrainian woman says that a robber stole £4m worth of jewellery shortly after she arrived in Paris. The man opened the door of Kristina Chernovetskaya’s taxi and grabbed her handbag. The woman is a banker and the daughter of the mayor of Kiev in Ukraine.
A pest control worker is in trouble with police, after he got creative with his rifle. A group of workers were asked to remove dangerously long icicles in Norrköping, but one of them was out of reach. One worker decided to shoot it down with his rifle, but police say that he can only use it to shoot pests. Sweden
The prime minister, Yulia Tymoshenko, has said that she will go to court to challenge the results of the recent election for a new president. She was defeated by Viktor Yanukovych, but claims that the vote was rigged. However, international observers said that the election was fair. - Ukraine

Kunio Hatoyama, an opposition MP, alleged that Yukio (below) borrowed money from their mother for political purposes, but did not declare it to officials and pay the taxes that he should have done. New Zealanders have been outnumbered by sheep for a long time, but they have now been overtaken by cows as well. There are 4.3 million people in the country, compared to 5.8 million cows and 32 million sheep. The figures were revealed this week in a report by the country’s official statistics agency.
