World Cup pile-up

World Cup pile-up

The Track Cycling World Cup Classics came to an end this week, with France just beating Britain to the overall top spot.

After the four separate World Cup events, France were top of the table, with 308 points. Britain were slightly behind on 302, with Australia’s 218 points giving them third place.

Although Victoria Pendleton only came third in the sprint final, she finished first in the overall standings to win the overall gold medal. She was the only British rider to win a title after the four rounds of the World Cup. The riders are now looking forward to the World Championships, which start in four weeks.

“I was lacking a bit of top end speed,” said Pendleton, “but fortunately, speed is quite easy to build on. Four weeks is a lot of time.”

The main story of the weekend came in the men’s keirin final. Sir Chris Hoy won, but only after a spectacular crash (above) had wiped out every other rider on the track. Malaysia’s Azizulhasni Awang picked himself up to finish in third, even though he had a 20cm splinter sticking through his calf. It was only after the race had finished that he realised how much it hurt.

Watch the clip below to see the crash and Hoy’s victory. Don’t worry if you’re squeamish, there’s nothing gruesome in the video!
