World Cup news and results - day six

Switzerland have caused the biggest upset so far in this World Cup, by beating the favourites Spain 1-0.

Although many football fans think that Spain are the best team in the world, they have a history of choking at the World Cup. However, after their awesome performances at Euro2008, Spanish fans thought that this could be their year.

A scrappy breakaway goal by Gelson Fernandes gave Switzerland victory, even though Spain were by far the better team and had much more of the possession. Credit is due to the Swiss defenders, though, as they performed brilliantly. Eren Derdiyok almost made it 2-0 with a fantastic jinking run, but his shot came back off the post.

The bad news for Spain is that no team has ever won the World Cup after losing their first match, and they have still got to play an excellent Chile side.

The hosts South Africa were soundly beaten in their match against Uruguay, which means that they have to beat France in their final group match to stand any chance of going through. At 1-0 down they still had a chance, but when their keeper Itumeleng Khune conceded a penalty and was sent off, it was all over. A goal five minutes into injury time made it 3-0 to Uruguay and a sad day for South African fans.

The day's other game saw Honduras lose 1-0 to a slick Chile team. Only some excellent goalkeeping and last-ditch tackles kept Honduras in the game, and if Chile can lose their habit of making sloppy passes in the final third of the pitch they should score a lot more goals.

Results from day six:

Honduras 0-1 Chile

Spain 0-1 Switzerland

South Africa 0-3 Uruguay
