World Cup news and results - day one

After months of talk, the World Cup has finally started. Here's the lowdown on the first day's action.

The day started for most people with Adrian Chiles on ITV1 cheekily saying that he would understand if any kids had decided to bunk off school to watch the opening ceremony.

The ceremony itself was pretty impressive, with everything from singers and dancers to a giant dung beetle. Although South Africa has been criticised by some lately, most people have been very impressed with the attitude and enthusiasm of the fans. The deafening noise of the vuvuzela horns seems to be the one thing that a lot of people aren't enjoying, though!

The day's opening match saw the hosts take on Mexico. Opening matches in tournaments are rarely great, but this one had some fantastic moments, particularly South Africa's goal. Siphiwe Tshabalala is the country's new hero after firing an absolute rocket into the top corner. Unfortunately for them, Mexico's Rafael Marquez equalised and the match ended 1-1.

The other two teams in Group A, Uruguay and France, ended the day with a disappointing 0-0 draw. The match's main talking point was the tournament's first red card, which saw Uruguay substitute Nicolas Lodeiro get two yellow cards. But even with an extra man for ten minutes, France couldn't create any meaningful chances.

Results from day one:

South Africa 1-1 Mexico

Uruguay 0-0 France

England's first match is tomorrow (Saturday 11 June), when they take on the USA. Catch it at 7.30pm on ITV1.
