World Cup news and results - day five

North Korea gave fans the biggest surprise in today's World Cup action.

Many people - ourselves included - predicted that Brazil would thrash North Korea. However, excellent organisation and defensive work frustrated Brazil, and it seemed like there would be no way through.

In the 55th minute, Brazil right-back Maicon broke the deadlock with an outrageous shot from an incredibly tight angle. It's unclear if he meant it as a cross or a shot, but if it was played for he deserves a massive pat on the back.

When Elano made it 2-0 it looked like the game was over, until North Korea's Ji Yun-Nam scored an excellent goal late on. The game finished 2-1, but North Korea will prove to be tough opposition for anyone in this tournament.

The game that everyone expected to light up the tournament, Ivory Coast v Portugal, turned out to be a rather drab 0-0 draw. Cristiano Ronaldo nearly scored a wonder goal in the 11th minute but was denied by the post. That was one of the very rare good moments in the game.

The most dramatic moment of the tournament so far happened in the final minute of injury time in New Zealand's game against Slovakia. The Kiwis were 1-0 down thanks to a suspiciously offside goal scored by Robert Vittek, until Winston Reid popped up to head home a stunning equaliser.

New Zealand's only previous matches in the finals came in 1982, when they lost all three games. There couldn't have been a more dramatic way to win your country's first point.

Results from day five:

New Zealand 1-1 Slovakia

Ivory Coast 0-0 Portugal

Brazil 2-1 North Korea
