Which school day would you prefer?
To celebrate the release of Children’s Choice Book Award ‘Author of the Year’ winner (2010) James Patterson’s latest children’s book release – Middle School: The Worst Years of My Life, we asked two pupils to tell us about their school day.
Hi, my name is Nick Hardwick and I’m from St. Louis Charter School in St. Louis, Missouri, USA.
At St. Louis Charter the daily schedule starts with a greeting from your home base teacher followed by six one-hour classes. Classes include elective, social studies, science, reading, writing, and maths.
In most classes you get 30 - 45 minutes of homework each night, and a test about once a month.
We have lockers and students visit them three times a day. Since we only have three minutes to get to class, most students visit their locker once in the morning, once at lunch and at the end of the day.
There are a couple of special days throughout the year at SCLS that stand out. The first is the peace rally days. The peace rally brings the entire school together (about 1,000 children) to get excited and have fun learning about the exciting new things that are happening at SLCS. We also have challenge days. These are days when we gather with our grade level to play games, share deep thoughts and secrets and make new bonds with kids you wouldn’t normally hang out with.
Last but not least the teachers at SLCS are what make the school amazing. They are always there for their students. They are willing to do whatever it takes to make their students successful, whether this means staying late, coming in early, adding a study session or helping them at lunch. It is an awesome privilege to be a part of the SLCS family.
I’m Bethan and am in my last year of primary school and so far I have loved it. We start with registration and have a lesson before assembly.
The class then collects coats and fruit before going out to the playground for a short break. We come in and then we have the same teacher and classroom for everything, apart from French or extra lessons.
The teachers will always explain anything that you don’t understand until you are confident and, across the school, there are many ways of being rewarded for your hard work.
Younger children earn stickers whereas older kids work towards prizes. Class prizes involve free time called Golden Time, or being allowed to play certain games.
At lunch there are clubs if you wish to give up your time. There is music: string group or choir, you can even learn the accordion or join the School of Rock band! Cheerleading, football, netball and more happens before and after school.
We have fun events like Book Week, where we dress up as a favourite book character and, for the choir, there is an O2 event where we sing with hundreds of other children. There are also competition days, sports days and interschool competitions in science, maths and team sports.
School is an exciting and fun place to learn.
