Wee used for fuel
A RESEARCH team is looking into the idea that human pee could be used as a renewable energy source.
A system has been developed to test the use of pee instead of toxic methanol or hydrogen in fuel cells. If it can be developed, pee energy could become a low-cost, non-toxic fuel option.
The team undertaking the research at Heriot-Watt University have been given a grant of £130,000 to try to develop the formula.
Dr Tao, one of the researchers explains: “Growing up in rural eastern China I was aware of the use of urea (found in pee) as an agricultural fertiliser. When I became a chemist and was looking at fuel cell development, I thought of using it in the process.”
