We took part in the Shakespeare Company's National Schools Festival
At school we have been practising a scene from Shakespeare’s play King Lear for the Royal Shakespeare Company’s National Schools Festival.
by Olivia Price, Rowley Lane School, Huddersfield
Ten schools took part in the regional cluster festival at Honley High School with a chance to win the opportunity to perform at The Swan Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon, the home of William Shakespeare. We started the project in November 2010 when our drama teacher, Miss Scott, chose 19 children to represent our school in the festival.
We worked as an ensemble, solving problems around the script and stage together. Ginny from the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) came into school to help us with our scene. After her contribution, it looked at lot better.
Two days before the first performance, we went to Honley High to see the stage that we were going to perform on. The rehearsal didn’t take as long as we thought it would so that was a bonus. We definitely felt proud of our piece and the reaction proved it all because we got the loudest applause and the biggest cheers.
Saturday 26 March was the big day and our most important performance, we were being videoed which would be sent to the judges.
One week and five days later, we found out that… we had won!! Now we can’t wait to perform at The Swan Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon.
We can’t wait!
