We interviewed the Pokémon director

We interviewed the Pokémon director

We got the chance to interview Mr Junichi Masuda, the director for the latest Pokémon video game Pokémon™ Black Version and Pokémon™ White Version. We didn’t know much about Mr Masuda and had to do quite a bit of research before our interview. Our interview was also filmed for First News TV. Here is our interview.

Aaron: Could you tell us about Pokémon Black and White and tell us what makes these new versions different to the previous games?

This time we focused on connectivity with other players; you’ll be able to see on your screen who is playing the game near and you’ll be able to play with them. You can also use infrared with the Black and White versions and using that feature you’ll be able to exchange Pokémon with your friends.

Josh: What’s been your involvement in the production of Pokémon™ Black Version and Pokémon™ White Version?

I was the director of the game and I actually composed some of the music too.

Josh: Cool! There are 150 new Pokémon in Pokémon™ Black Version and Pokémon™ White Version. Can you tell us about some of them?

Yes, there’s 150 all new Pokémon in these versions and when we created these Pokémon there were 17 people on the design team and they came up with all the new Pokémon together.

Aaron: You must own loads of Pokémon memorabilia. What is your favourite item?

Aside from the video games, I like the trading cards; I have them all. I like them because there’s a lot of strategy involved in playing the trading card game. You know, they’re also portable, so you can play with them anywhere.

Why do you think Pokémon has remained so popular for so long?

I think there are three main reasons. The first is that there is a strong degree of playing experience attached to Pokémon, the second is that there are so many different Pokémon now in the games that there’s really something for everyone and finally, Pokémon is all about connectivity; connecting with friends, battling against each other and enjoying it together.
