We chat with Chipmunk!
CHIPMUNK has been one of the big stars of 2009. His single, Oopsy Daisy, gave him his first UK number one and his debut album, I Am Chipmunk, reached number two, and he’s only just left school! We caught up with the busiest man in showbiz to talk about all his success and discover what he’s got planned for 2010.
This year, you won a MOBO, you released your solo album and you had your first number one. How will you be celebrating the end of what’s been a massive year for you?
I haven’t really got any big plans to celebrate. I normally spend New Year’s Eve reflecting on the past year and thinking about what I’m going to do in the next year. I’m a very thoughtful person.
If it’s possible, can you pick a highlight from 2009?
The highlight was definitely releasing my album. I put so much into it, I just wanted everyone to hear it and see what I’ve been up to all this time and what’s been happening in my life up to now. I’m really proud of it and I really feel like I wrote the best album I could. And, it went to number two which was really good.
Your success seems all the more amazing when you think you were finishing your A Levels at the same time as your music career was taking off. What was it like trying to balance the two?
That was really hard, I don’t think some people appreciate or understand how hard it actually was! I used to get very grumpy when I was doing my exams. It was just a lot to do. A Levels aren’t like GCSEs. You have to study at home and I was studying on the road. I just had to take a few deep breaths and try to concentrate.
Now that you’ve finished school, are you going to focus on your music career?
Actually, I want to go to drama school, but still carry on with music. I like to have more than one thing to focus on because when I only have music to focus on I find myself going mad! I love acting, of all different kinds. I was pretty good at drama when I was at college. I played all different kinds of roles, so I’ll just go for it, try anything.
What about presenting, you’ve had your own mini series Chip TV and presented Radio 1’s BBC Switch, would you like to do more things like that?
I love presenting. I would definitely do more if I got the opportunity.
You obviously like being busy then! What are you up to at the moment. Are you keeping busy?
I’m releasing another single from my first album, which is called Look For Me. It’s a feel-good track. We just wanted to make a song that was very light-hearted that explains the story of how I got to where I am today. At the moment, though, I’m in the studio drafting out ideas and putting them together for my second album. I think it’s going to be way more emotional this time. And, I ‘ve got my first headline tour coming up in February.
What can your fans expect from your shows?
Well, I’m trying to keep it under wraps at the moment. Just come and you’ll see it all – it’s going to be good.
Is it hard being on tour and away from home?
It’s really hard, really tiring, and really stressful. The only time you get to release is when you’re on stage, which I love doing. But, then, if you’re not 100% fit, because maybe you’re tired, then it is really obvious. So, it takes a lot of work.
Is there anything you miss when you’re away on tour?
I miss my little sister. She’s only 12. She gets to come to a few things, though. I took her to the Jingle Bell Ball in December.
You’ve just done a performance with The Saturdays and you’ve worked with loads of other artists. Who would you like to work with next?
Yes, working with The Saturdays was great, a real pleasure – I like them. I’m always open to suggestion but I like the Black Eyed Peas. I don’t really have a dream act I’d like to work with because I just like working with all people. I can introduce my style to them and they can introduce their style to me. I don’t really focus on setting up collaborations. Usually another artist will get in touch with me. I don’t know who will call though – I’m just the little rapper guy!
What else have you got planned for 2010?
Apart from the tour and the new album, I’m just going to focus on being the best!
Have you got any New Year’s resolutions?
Just that I’m going to try and go to the gym. I’m going to bulk up! Oh and of course, I’ll be trying to be the best.
Chipmunk’s new single, Look for Me, and his album, I Am Chipmunk, are both out now through Jive Records.
