Trapped miners are alive

Miners who had been trapped in a mine in Chile since 5 August made contact this week.

Rescuers had been working for weeks to free the trapped men and when they used a new probe they heard hammering sounds. Then, when they brought out the probe it had a note tied to it, which said: “All 33 of us are fine in the shelter.”

The men were working at the San Jose mine near the city of Copiapo in Chile when it collapsed. It’s thought the miners are 7km into the mine and 700m below ground. As it could take months to dig them out, the plan is to send them food and hydration gels through boreholes.
