Too many children are missing out on Harry Potter, says minister

A senior minister has said that too many children are missing out on classic books as they haven’t learned to read properly.

Schools Minister Nick Gibb is calling for standards to be raised, so that all pupils can enjoy reading books such

as Harry Potter and

The Chronicles of Narnia by the time they reach secondary school.

He said: “We’re lucky that some of the most magical and exciting children’s books ever written have been written in the English language – the works of Roald Dahl, Michael Morpurgo and Jacqueline Wilson; Harry Potter and Narnia. Too many children can’t enjoy these brilliant books because they haven’t learned to read properly.”

The title is not true at all in my opinion! Nobody is missing out by not reading it. The best books are: The Twilight Saga and any Twilight related books (at Number 1) and at number two you have things like the J.W books. :)

It's true...some kids say that HP is complete trash and they've never read it. I used to hate it, but when I was seven I saw the first film and I LOVED it! I think everyone should give everything a try before they judge it!!

The Harry Potter books are NOT good. Did you know that HP got rejected 12 times before it was published?? They are fantasy, unralistic, and BAD. I dont think there is any good language in them. Why should kids read them if they're gonna think spelliamus is a word?

lighten up shoeless27, the books may have been rejected 12 times, but Jo Rowling is now one of the richest people on the planet. dont know bout you, but i think Rowling should be congratulated for trying so hard to get her writing on the shelf! so ok, maybe im a bit biassed, but the hp series are the most amazing books i have ever read. they have such a depth and so much hidden info. best books ever xxxxxxxx

I love the HP series. Then it's the Hunger Games series. Gallagher Academy series.Chronicle of Narnia Series

i am harry poter fan and i will watch them over and over again

  • CandyEllz (Age 11) wrote on Saturday, 21 January 2012 @ 13:24

@shoeless Yes, Harry Potter was rejected, not because they thought it was bad - because they thought people wouldn't want fantasy. And then look what happened! The books are amazing. Also, -it's expelliarmus by the way- JKR used lots of Latin words, ect. to make them up. So the language is fine. And if you say that you are also criticising Roald Dahl who makes up lots of random words.

  • CandyEllz (Age 11) wrote on Saturday, 21 January 2012 @ 13:25

@Redhorse10 - Red, Twilight isn't really for younger kids like the Minister is talking about, it's for teenagers.

  • Leafy5000 (Age 10) wrote on Saturday, 11 February 2012 @ 17:02

I agree. People by year 4, 5 & 6 should read to learn. NOT learn to read However, all those who say Harry Potter is bad, I agree with you! People should be reading J.R.R Tolkien's Lord of the Rings! Much better than Harry Potter I can tell you!
