The year of JLS
They were the hottest new stars of 2009 and this year, with world domination on their minds and two sell-out tours booked, things are only gonna get bigger and better for JLS.
You had a phenomenal year in 2009, do you ever have to pinch yourselves?
JB: Sometimes it doesn’t even get that far, we’re so busy we often get home, go to sleep and don’t get time to sit and think about what has happened. Then a week later you suddenly think “wow last week I performed in from of 10,000 people.” I think that is the best way to be though, always working on the next thing, it is only looking back that we realise. It’s crazy.
You’ve won awards, released a book, and have a clothing and jewellery line – are you taking over the world?
Aston: We’re trying!
JB: It’s just stuff that we’d like to see out there. It’s just another part of JLS. We have all these ideas and we’re throwing them out there. Our manager is like “guys, let’s take it a step at a time!”
Oritsé: Soon we’re going to add JLS to the school curriculum.
Marvin: I’m not sure about that, I’m worried what they’d be teaching.
You’ve single-handedly made boybands cool again. Is that a lot of pressure?
JB: Well, not quite single-handedly, we have a great team around us. They work hard. Obviously we came from a great programme which gave us a fantastic platform to start from. Hopefully now we can just go on to bigger and better things.
How are you finding all the dancing?
Marvin: We’re learning quickly y’know. None of us are trained dancers, we’re singers and none of us excelled in that area. If we’d looked at the Beat Again video a year ago we’d have thought there was a lot of dancing. We’ve built ourselves up for that now and we’re confident in our dancing, we’re learning quicker. Some quicker than others.
Aston: But we’re all now dancers too!
Do you still live together as well as work together?
Marvin: Aston and I do, Oritsé just got his own place and JB is at home still. He is the one with the most money!
JB: I am looking to find my own place though.
Aston: We’re never at home anyway. We go in and go to sleep, or finish work, get ready and then go out again to meet up.
Oritsé: It would be different if we had lots of time to kill.
Does that mean you know all each other’s bad habits?
Marvin: JB is moody in the mornings, although today he is full of beans. Oritsé is messy – he makes his mark wherever he is and Aston has too much energy. I’m just grumpy!
Aston: Marvin is an old man.
Oritsé: I’m working on my messiness though.
What are JLS hoping to achieve in 2010?
Marvin: To still be around! To have another album, more singles and tours.
Aston: We’re touring in February but then we get to do another one in December.
How are plans for the first tour going? It’s not far away now!
Marvin: It’s not! We’re working on it!
Oritsé: There are loads of exciting ideas at the moment so we’re just working through them all.
Aston: But to all those people sitting in the first ten rows, you might get wet. I’m just saying, bring a rain mac or something.
What are you most excited about doing the tour?
Marvin: Being on the road and performing all of our own material.
JB: Getting to do a whole show will be great. A lot of the shows we do are us and other people, or we’re supporting someone and we only get to do two or three tracks. This will be wicked.
Aston: An hour and 20 minutes of JLS.
Marvin: It’s the longest show we’ve done. We started training for it in October, we all have personal trainers and have been building up our cardio workouts to get us ready for it.
Aston: I’m even training tonight and it’s Friday night, and Saturday morning but it’s gotta be done!
