The Wildlife Trust needs help counting hares
This winter, the Wildlife Trusts are asking people in Wales to help them count the number of wild hares in the countryside.
They are trying to work out if the decline in hare numbers is slowing down. They will compare data from areas that have had habitat conservation work with areas that are left alone. The number of hares in Wales has declined by 75% since the end of World War II in 1945.
The habitat the hares need to thrive is slowly being taken over by crop farming, although wildlife-friendly farming is helping to increase the numbers of hares.
Members of the public reporting their sightings helps build a bigger picture about the numbers of hares there are and where they are living.
You can download a hare survey form from your local Wildlife Trusts website.
