The 10 year anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks is this weekend
On September 11, 2001, attacks in the United States killed thousands of people. Ten years on and those events are still affecting our lives.
Alistair Burt , MP, gave First News his view on why it’s important to understand how that day changed history.
"Tuesday 11 September 2001 began as a normal day for people on the east coast of America. However, the tragic events of that morning will stay with all of us for the rest of our lives.
"At 8:46am, the first of two passenger planes was flown into New York’s World Trade Center by terrorists. At 9:03am a second plane hit the second tower. A third plane hit the Pentagon in Washington and a fourth crashed when passengers fought back against the terrorists. This attack resulted in the deaths of around 3,000 innocent people, from more than 90 different countries and of all races and religions.
"The attack came from a group called Al Qaeda, led by Osama Bin Laden. They committed the attacks to make a political point. However, the attacks were condemned by virtually every country and political leader around the world."
Now, ten years on the world is taking part in events to remember the tenth anniversary of the September 11 attacks.
The main event in the UK to remember the victims will be the ceremony at London’s September 11 memorial garden, which was opened by the Princess Royal in 2003. Relatives will read out the names of the British victims of the attacks and lay a white rose for each one on a memorial stone beneath bronze plaques listing them all. Memorial services will also be held at St Paul’s Cathedral in the morning and at Westminster Abbey in the evening.
In New York there will be a concert at the British Memorial Garden site in Hanover Square, which is just half a mile from Ground Zero and also commemorates the 67 UK victims.

Very sad news. So many innocent people were killed that day, and the emergency services did an excellent job too.I hope there won't be a repeat of this awful day. My Mum told me all about this.R.i.p everyone that were killed.

I know that there was 3 plains but only 2 crashed into the twin towers. the 3rd plane crashed into a feild and the people on board (it was full of passingers) desided to crash it in a feild to reduce life loss. Evan the hijackers wanted to crash the plain into a feild. Though the whole story is realy sad and i feel OMG. :-(

its disgraceful, who would do such an atrocity? i take my hat off to the flight that overtook the al-qaeda terrorists. 2653 killed in the twin towers. its scary how much damage a few terrorists can do. :(

I am a muslim and i feel ashamed that people have done this as we still get the blame even though we weren't even involved:)

What happend in 9/11 was so so sad but i think all we can do now is remember those who lost their lives and hope nothing like this will ever happen again. I'm very sorry if you lost anyone in 9/11.

It is terribe what happened in 9/11 and hopefully nothing as terrible will ever happen again. RIP all victims of 9/11 .

9/11 was a really terrible event, and all the thousands of people who lost there lives, R.I.P. I salute the people who overcame the terrorists and crashed the plane into a field. It's like not one of them was thinking about themselves, always others. They probably saved exleast 1000 lives... I think if someone close to you died, you should think about the happy parts of there lives, and not the sad bits. So once again, R.I.P.

It was so uneccesary for Al-Queda to do that. People died for no reason other that they were in the wrong place at the wrong time. It's good that people remember and pay their respects to the people who died and hope that nothing as bad as this ever happens again.

It is ever so sad what happened. It is one of those things that people will always remember - both my parents remember where/how/when they were told. It is horrible to think that that was the last moments of their lives hurtling down towards the ground... imagine being called by your loved one who is on the plane saying that they are going to die - it would be awful.

9/11 really was horrible I heard all these very sad story's on the radio :(

I'm very shocked to hear all of this. Although it was ten years ago the astonishment of hearing this incredibly unfair event never leaves you. I cannot believe that so many people died, and it's all very sad. Let's hope that the people who died are always remembered and respected as they are now. :(

It is despicable! Loads of innocent people were killed. At least one plane got overthrown by the innocent people and they gave their lives to save others. They were so brave!
laurcool (Age 12) wrote on Thursday, 15 September 2011 @ 18:27
I really can't belive this happened. I was only one year old at the time but seeing those devastating pictures and videos and hearing the stories of the families who lost their lives almost brang me to tears (really!) to this day. I can't imagine what it's like to have someone you know killed in such a terrible way. RIP to those who were sadly killed and the heroes of 9/11.

It is still alarming to think about all this. Although it was quiet a time back from now, it is a historical fact, the criminal who was the brain of this has had his punishment but even now, when they're rebuilding, you never know what the people living on the earth are doing and thinking.
rockgirl (Age 11) wrote on Friday, 16 September 2011 @ 17:31
This was a very unexpected and alarming event. Who would even think to do something as bad as this? Innocent, happy people with FAMILIES got killed in this incident, and I don't see why they should have to loose their life just because other people wanted attention, or just to be cruel. RIP to all those who were killed in the 9/11 attacs, this event will be remembered all around the world for ever.

Al-Queada were mindless and stupid. Doing that just made the Americans hate them even more. The 3rd plane never crashed because the brave people stopped the hijackers. R.I.P

This is so terrible. I think people who do stuff like this must be really horrible, I definitly would not want to meet them. The pictures are so upsetting and even though it was years ago I think it is good that people still remember it.

On the 11th September 2001, there were attacks in the United States, that killed thousands of people and the World Trade towers were ruined. And now we remember them on 9/11. It was a really sad event and shows what extremes people go to. The people behind the attacks should feel so guilty.
