Teen girl finally sets sail alone

14-year-old Laura Dekker has started her around the world sail.

A 14-year-old girl has set off on her mission to become the youngest person to sail around the world on her own.

Laura Dekker had been stopped by Dutch social services from attempting this earlier as they thought it was too dangerous for her to try. But in April, Laura won her court case and her manager announced this week that she has set sail.

Laura has two years to complete her trip, and if she makes it back before she turns 17 in September 2012, she will have broken the record set by 16-year-old Jessica Watson. However, she won’t be featured in the Guinness World Record book as they do not want to be seen encouraging young sailors to take on risky trips.
