Students go on hunger strike after college bans veils
Five Tunisian students went on hunger strike on January 18 against a ban on niqab veils imposed by the University of Manuba in Tunisia.
Niqab veils are veils which are worn by many Muslim women. They cover the face but leave the eyes uncovered.
While most Muslims scholars say that women should have to wear a hijab - a scarf that covers their hair - very few say that they should have to wear a niqab too.
This was the second hunger strike at the university: a previous one ended on January 5.
The dispute has been running since November 2011 where the university banned the veils.
Imen Ben Rouha, one of the students participating in the hunger strike said: "We are ready to sacrifice our lives for this cause."
Habib Kazdaghli, the Dean of the Faculty of Letters, Arts and Humanities at the University of Manuba, said that he would trying to get rid of students and protestors who were trying to disrupt lessons and exams with their protests.

Girls are allowed to wear next to nothing, yet when some want to cover up, they find they can't. People should be allowed to wear what they want without being afraid of being arrested. These girls wish to wear the niqab, so let them wear the niqab! They aren't being forced to wear them, it's their choice! We call ourselves an open-minded society with freedom of choice, but are we really?

Exactly right!!! You cant see the persons face so you don't know if they are a suicide bomber or something!!! Why would these people want to wear veils, you cant ever be recognised and cant show your face!!! I wouldn't like it.

People wearing veils get a lack of vitamin d (because there skin doesn't get enough sunlight.) making them unhealthy. But they should be allowed to wear them if it is there religion.

jethro007 these muslim women want to wear the veil and that is the exaxt point in which they wear the veil as partly it is a religious reason and also they do not want every1 to see them so they cover up there beauty and show it to their beloved. Also why do people assume that Musim women or men because they cover up they carry a bomb or something.Well you might think that if you hear about 9/11 but that was some silly man and for wat he did he does not count as being a Muslim. You see these ladies on the streets barley wearing anything and wen people want to cover up people protest about it!Then maybe some people should protest about people wearing literally nothing!

Also cariadfab my auntie wears the veil and her skin couldn't look any more natural and that is without wearing any make-up or creams and also i kno many other people who wear the veil and there skin is very good.. however that is your opnnion. But you kno jethro007 that is very sterotypical and some people might take offence to that.!!

No-one means to offend anyone else with their comments. It's good to hear everyone's opinion and discuss the topic in a mature way. Some people think that veils should be banned at schools because they make it harder to tell what people are thinking - eg. if a pupil was confused, it would be harder for the teacher to know. Other people think that you should have the freedom to wear whatever you want as long as it is not hurting anyone else. It's a very tricky subject, and I am very glad that you are all discussing this in a mature way.
