Should school day be longer?

The school day should be made longer to get children ready for the world of work, say some politicians.

Stephen Twigg, the Labour party’s education boss, says a longer day would keep children off the streets, stop them being sucked into local gangs and give the most deprived pupils a place to study away from difficult home lives.

He also thinks that pupils should be put into groups in schools by ability or interests, rather than age.

The MP’s comments come after a survey by business leaders found that one out of three young people was not ready for a job.

One school in Norwich is already open for six days a week, 51 weeks of the year. Others are planning to keep pupils in school until at least 5pm or stage regular weekend lessons.

Mr Twigg thinks all pupils should have a longer day. “First, for secondary pupils, it would mean getting used to a work-like timetable,” he says. “How many employers expect their workers to leave the office at 3.30pm?

“Second, too many pupils who suffer from poor housing conditions struggle to find a quiet place to study or do their homework. Providing a longer school day will give these students a haven away from what, in some cases, can be chaotic and troublesome home lives. Third, it can take young people, quite literally, off the streets.”

Mr Twigg says studies have shown that gangs are most active immediately after schools close, and providing longer school-based activities may stop some young people getting into trouble.

No because this means changing the lessons format. We have timetables so certain lessons are on certain days so it would just be so confusing

Yes we finish at 2:40...that's a bit early i think it should be longer maybe not have extra lessons but everyone could have like 1 hour homework time after school...and finish at 3:40.

No our school day is already too long and I think that spending time at home with our family is way more important than using more time at school. Sure people who want to do homework at school should be allowed to stay and do it but if we stay at school we would be made to have more lessons and the more lessons the more homework and you have less time to do it!!! I already think the school day is too long. I only end up with about an hour each night to do what I want.

  • mihr (Age 10) wrote on Friday, 13 January 2012 @ 18:52

No because if people do extra curricular activities they would not finish until really late and would still have homework to complete.

  • suzyrules (Age 10) wrote on Friday, 13 January 2012 @ 19:34

No way! You wouldn't have time for after school clubs!

  • redhorse10 (Age 13) wrote on Friday, 13 January 2012 @ 19:53

No! That's really just an excuse to keep kids inside school for as long as they can! What these ministers have to consider is: The pupils in schools want a social life, life isn't all about school. Though it is a big part in the future, you won't get to many places without social skills. Also, we are 18 and under, can't we just have our childhood? Is that a crime? Adults work from 9-5 most commonly, and a lot of them don't work weekends, so why should we? Adults work to be paid, we don't. We get no reward out of school apart from the qualifications at the end and the knowledge, but that isn't always as satisfying. Keeping school open for the extra hours also makes it harder for children/teenagers to have hobbies or join clubs out of school, and there are a lot of families in the UK who need more time to bond, not less! A final thing is that, despite the fact I have said they complain a lot, I think this is unfair on the teachers because they already mark until hours after school, and keeping them back for more hours isn't very fair. I finish at 3:30pm and in the Winter it is already getting dark at this time, I can't be walking home at 5:30pm in the dark. Some people have nobody to pick them up at this sort of time because parents are at work. Overall, this act is unfair, inconsiderate to everyone and really makes me wonder about the politicians. Most people don't like school that much anyway! We only go 'cause we have to. ;)

  • neemtree (Age 12) wrote on Saturday, 14 January 2012 @ 10:37

No for many reasons! Firstly because actually most kids don't live in an unstable home so this would upset nearly all the kids at school, all of which do have a stable working environment. This would be great for homeless kids undoubtedly but still this would not be a good measure. Also you would have to totally reorganise the timetable and besides 4 o'clock is only an hour before jobs end anyway. Finally KIDS DON'T LIKE STAYING AT SCHOOL FOR HOURS!

  • cariadfab (Age 10) wrote on Saturday, 14 January 2012 @ 16:49

I think we should have shorter hours so that when we are at school we are at our brightest and fully awake. If we did this then we would get more time for out of school activities and we would have more time for us to do homework. If we had longer to do homework then there would be less people getting trouble because they are unable to finish it because of out of school clubs. We could have slightly shorter holidays to make up for the hours of school missed. Did you know my friend from gym doesn't go to a boarding school but still only gets Christmas day and Boxing doy off. Not even weekends!

  • Arthuroony (Age 9) wrote on Saturday, 14 January 2012 @ 17:02

I think that school being longer is a despicable idea for a number of reasons: 1. Because you can only have so much pressure on a school kid that he/she can take. 2. If some schools have timetables, [I know mine does.]It will probobly mess everything up, and confuse everyone In the class! I'd be dazed! 3. When you get home AFTER school, you feel relived to be at your comfort zone, But if you got home really late from school you'll have to get washed up and ready for bed. [Only if you were to young to stay up to any time you wanted to]and if you wanted to have someone round after school... Think again...

  • AppleKiwi (Age 8) wrote on Saturday, 14 January 2012 @ 17:12

  • Boulderax (Age 12) wrote on Saturday, 14 January 2012 @ 18:10

I can't beleive that you would think of the idea because we already have to do a few hours of homework after school so that would make life a real bore and I would be so tired that wouldn't do well in school because of all the work

  • TheJuice (Age 14) wrote on Saturday, 14 January 2012 @ 18:27

Sometimes I stay in one of the rooms at school for an hour and do my homework. I really doing my homework there because it is really peaceful (I'm usually the only one there) and there is nothing else to do so I can just get it done however I think that school is long enough as it is and you would get really tired and then when you got home you would just be to tired to do your homework or practice your instrument etc.

  • nosyrosy (Age 10) wrote on Sunday, 15 January 2012 @ 08:49

no I do not I enjoy school & we go home at 3.50 we usually have 1 hour of homework which would be too much if we went home much later especially as I live ages away.I think school should offer a wide range of clubs for people who need it so we have 2 days off for family.

  • gm3995 (Age 11) wrote on Sunday, 15 January 2012 @ 11:48

No I go to school from 8:40 to 3:50 and I think that is long enough, we have a howework club and you just go and leave the library whenever you want. We're also allowed to do homework at breaktimes if we want. Under 1/4 of all children are either homeless or are having trouble at home - I've never known anyone like this. Not many people are in a gang or anything where I live. There is no point in making school hours longer because that just encourages people to stay out later and I have vto take a 40min bus journey to get to my school

  • Prill (Age 7) wrote on Sunday, 15 January 2012 @ 11:53

I don't think this would be fair because although there are children who suffer from poor housing who will find this useful, what about the people who don't need it? I don't have much time to relax after school as it nis, this would only give us less time to relax and be....kids! Besides, if you want us to get used to a worklike timetable, why don't you send us to work? the whole point that we go to school is so that we can learn because we are only young and we don't need to get used to work yet! No!l used to live in England and now l live in Japan. l was amazed how the teachers taught children in Japan because they really work hard and they think about how the student's can enjoy learning everyday. The teachers in Japan go to school even when it's a day off too. My teacher works until midnight everyday and there are a lot of people like him. l have never seen a gang in the streets in japan or a friend that had been bullied l think that this is because the teachers are thinking about the children a lot. l've been to my friends houses and everybody had great home lives. England shouldn't be considering about having extra time at school or not but l think should be considering about how the teachers are teaching and be solving the problem of home life in England. Anyways l think that too much studying can cause stress as well.

Yes! I think it's a great idea. It would be really good at getting us prepared for the long hours of work, so it wouldn't be a shock to the system, and a lot of people sit around doing nothing for hours (like me...) Having longer school days would prevent that, which I think is great!

  • BaconDeath (Age 12) wrote on Saturday, 21 January 2012 @ 12:47

I think the idea is just plain idiocy. Teenagers are grumpy 80% of the time at home due to being tired from the stress of school and extending that means that they will just be grumpier, which will affect their learning and result in them failing their exams. Also I just started secondary school in September and instead of homework we have Extended Learning Projects (ELPs). We are supposed to have one every two weeks, but sometimes the teachers are giving us on a week early ,due to everyone being there and people who are at sports events missing the lesson, and 90% of the time they do that we already have an ELP due the very next week.

  • mattyrocks (Age 11) wrote on Saturday, 21 January 2012 @ 16:42

i don't think so because we alresdy finish at 4:00 or 5:00 so idon't think the school day should be longer anyehere because children should get time at home and should be able to wander round and form gang's so they can get ti know more people there age.

Although I think it's important to learn the right amount, I also think the more time spent away from teachers the better they can be so annoying and strict also I like being home for Simpsons at 6 O'Clock on Channel 4 and sometimes it can take an hour to get home, therefore if I left school at 5 O'Clock I wouldn't even be able to watch that and that would male me rather angry and you wouldn't like me when I'm angry.

although everyone is protesting because it affects us badly at the moment, it will help us in the future because we will know more and be more prepared for the real world, as opposed t being used to being in a bubble of easiness. i think it's a good idea because if we have had more lessons, then we will be more likely to get into university and get good jobs. also, its like how when a young child does not want to go to bed but their parent makes them. the child is unhappy at not staying up late, but if they hadn't gone to bed then they will really regret it the next day!

No!!!! We already have from 8.45am-3.15pm a day. Do they want us to have any social life with our family? If you put on more hours a school and we have more lessons then we will have more homework and less time to interact with our friends and family because we'll be to busy at school or doing homework. As teachers have already noticed kids are happy and chirpy in the morning school but when it gets to the afternoon school all the children start to et dull and in a iuation where they don't want to learn because they are tired and miserable. Why torture us like that when were already tired and ready to go home.

But I think they could just make the school ending time different because everyone needs at least 2 days of , so just extend the time we finish school to about to 4:00pm or something just please don't expand the amount of days we have .One reason why you should just expand the ending time is because people will be miserable about the days we have to go to school but i know that everyone in Holy ghost school will be happy about the days ending longer but don't torture us the pain of living 2 days of from our hard and up to stranded work for our teachers in the first place thankyou

  • zanadu (Age 12) wrote on Tuesday, 24 January 2012 @ 20:14

  • pipsqueak7 (Age 10) wrote on Wednesday, 25 January 2012 @ 17:45

i think the idea is stupendous. the politics simply cannot teach 4 year olds how to be 20. And also the whole ability group thing is stupid! you need to be with people the same age as you, who know what your going through. At 7 you have lots of fall outs and at 10-11 you can't tell a year 3 about periods or your love life!(no offence on all those year 3's out there!) besides, you might get bullied if you were with a bunch of kids half the age of you. Also we need enough time to do clubs whether we do them because they are fun or because they are life skills(e.g.swimming,self defence.) Also if we had 6 days of school we would have to fit practically our life into one day. Not fair, imagine our timetables. TODAY see dad, play with mum, chores, play with bro,see bezzie, club, other club, other club, see little bro's bezzie, shopping, ALL IN ONE DAY!we need to be kids!

  • pipsqueak7 (Age 10) wrote on Wednesday, 25 January 2012 @ 17:53

I do not think school days should be longer because children need to spend time with their families when they get home. That also means they have less time to do their homework, which will result in more detentions. Children will also get sick of coming to school for that long, and consequently, bunk of school. If the children do however want to study more, schools offer libraries and study clubs.

the times of school should not change beacase teachers will be to tired to teach and that means children won't get a good education and the time wont make a diffence beacase we will get to stressed and do the same amount of work.

  • Maypole5 (Age 9) wrote on Thursday, 2 February 2012 @ 11:39

i dont think that the times shouldnt change because most jobs times are based around 3.15pm if i changed most jobs would have to change times + teachers would have less time to get things ready so children would only get the same amount of time in a dy and would get to strest

  • Maypole5 (Age 9) wrote on Thursday, 2 February 2012 @ 11:39

I am 9 years old and I think it wouldent be fair because teachers can't get enough work ready However they will still get the same amount of work in a longer time as we would usualy get anyway and the children will get to stressed to concentrate.

  • Maypole5 (Age 9) wrote on Thursday, 2 February 2012 @ 11:41

(age 9) No becouse you will not spend enough time with your family and you will get upset if you stay at school 247 also you will go to sleep if you go to scool all the time and your quality off your work wil drop and the teachers will stay in school for to long .

  • Maypole5 (Age 9) wrote on Thursday, 2 February 2012 @ 11:49

  • Maypole5 (Age 9) wrote on Thursday, 2 February 2012 @ 11:53

I say no because parents wont be able to see their kids so the parents would get sad as a result of depression. The other reason I disagree is that kids would get very tired and miss days of school because they would be sleeping. This means attendance will plummet!!

  • Maypole5 (Age 9) wrote on Thursday, 2 February 2012 @ 11:55

(9 years)I dont think the school day should be longer because everyone would be to tired and you would be to tired and stressed out and children wont get a good education for their life.parets might be worried about thier children because they might think that they might be unwell.Teachers would be to tired to!!!!!

  • Maypole5 (Age 9) wrote on Thursday, 2 February 2012 @ 11:56

(Age 10) Some parents will be late for work by the time they pick their children and if they keep doing that then they will get fired which means they can't get food for their children which means they will go hungry. This is a bad idea.

  • Maypole5 (Age 9) wrote on Thursday, 2 February 2012 @ 12:03

(age 9) Teachers will have to stay longer to mark the extra work that his/hers pupils have done. As a result this will lead to tiredness and the teachers will will get really stressed.Ths means that they may not be able to teach the next day. So I think that the school day should not be made longer and children should not go to school on a weekend.

  • Maypole5 (Age 9) wrote on Thursday, 2 February 2012 @ 12:04

I think it would not be a good idea because children would get stressed and they will not be able to consontrate well which means they will not do the quality work they need to do. Also if we do go to school for a bit longer children will get more ill because they are not getting much sleep and the attendence will then drop down to a very low level!!!!!

  • Maypole5 (Age 9) wrote on Thursday, 2 February 2012 @ 12:06

Are parent's will miss us as a result it will cause a worse relationship a we wont now each other as much so i say we should not have longer shool days and it might it will make us stressed and effecct are learning we will be tired and board so we cant concentrate aswell as we should do and the teachers would get stessed out to.

  • Maypole5 (Age 9) wrote on Thursday, 2 February 2012 @ 12:10

I really dont think that we should have longer school days because for some childeren they may be very exhauted with all the previous work they have done in the last couple of hours in the school day. also the parents will need to work for a longer time or they come back from work even before we can get home. so parents have to wait a longer time before we can get a chance to finish a regular school day.

  • Maypole5 (Age 9) wrote on Thursday, 2 February 2012 @ 12:11

if we stayed in school longer our behaviour would be really bad and we would be grumpy. If our behaviour was really bad we would go out in the nights with gangs drinking alcahol and being bad like robbing houses and stealing because we would be so stressed out because of school so i think it is a bad idea for school days to be longer.from connor age 10

  • Maypole5 (Age 9) wrote on Thursday, 2 February 2012 @ 12:11

it will not be a good idea because children would get homesick because they wont be able to see there parents therefore they woulsd always be ill and another reason would be that if school lasted til 5:30 if you have after school club or any other one after school you would go home at 6 and wont have mutch time to do what you want to do also if there trying to do this for a better education well this isnt the right idea because teachers wont be working at there best so we wont get a good education so we wont get a good job and the other reason is if you get tied or frustrated you might get into trouble and the last reason is you will get so tied and fall asleep and get into trouble and the teachers might fall assleep so they wont get a good education so a big NOOOOOOOO

  • Maypole5 (Age 9) wrote on Thursday, 2 February 2012 @ 12:16

Its would not be a good idea to extend the school day because... The perents would not be able to cope especially with younger children because they nrrd more sleep. If you only had one day off school then you would have to use that day to get ready for the next day of school. As a result of having little sleep then they would fall ill and would not be able to go to school. This would therefor mean the attendance would go down. Also this would mean a lack of education and they would not be ready for the coming tests. However if they do come to school every day that wold be too much and they would get ill.

  • Maypole5 (Age 9) wrote on Thursday, 2 February 2012 @ 12:21

I think that the school day should only be extended by half an hour at the most. This is because half an hour longer means we can get more work done. As a result we would have a better education. Any longer than this would result in children being too tired to cope.

  • chocolate8 (Age 11) wrote on Thursday, 2 February 2012 @ 20:05

  • Maypole5 (Age 9) wrote on Friday, 3 February 2012 @ 11:41

NO: 1. I think parents would spent less time with there childern because they will be home from school later. Therefore it would have a big bad effect with there relationship because they won't have that quality time. 2. Teachers would be very tired because they would have to wake up earlyer/later to prepair more work for the pupils.Consequently there taeching levels will go down.

  • Maypole5 (Age 9) wrote on Friday, 3 February 2012 @ 11:48

  • Maypole5 (Age 9) wrote on Friday, 3 February 2012 @ 11:51

I don't think that children should have a longer school day is because the teachers and pupils will get very stressed, so they will not be able to concentrate. Therefore the quality and amount of work will go down and they will not be able to do as well in the tests they are given.

  • Maypole5 (Age 9) wrote on Friday, 3 February 2012 @ 11:56

Children will not get enough sleep and they will not consantrait. Teachers will not eable to get our work and we would only get even more bord and we would only get harf of the day done of work.

    No

  • tomo63 (Age 12) wrote on Saturday, 4 February 2012 @ 12:35

No but I can understand why. Some kids might hang around in gangs after school in cities like London or Birmingham, so it might decrease the crime rate and give people a chance to get education rather than hangin about in gangs

  • tomo63 (Age 12) wrote on Saturday, 4 February 2012 @ 12:36

But in places away fom big cities no way!!!!

no that's ridiculous just because some kids join up gangs doesn't mean we all will. and these ministers always talk about stopping bulling what do they think will happen if you mix ages? and they don't get that just because we're kids we can't have a social life! if they realy wanted to stop gangs and kids on the street they would do something not just sit there like smart talking chickens. and if they really were concerned about pupils' home conditions they would actually try and help them., but since they're not they'll just sit there and make false promises and unfair statements to get a good reputation. and just imagine a 12 year old coming home from school after their parents at like 8pm! if they actually cared microscopicly about us kids then they would take action not just sit there and try to make it look like they were doing something.

Absoloutly rubbish- school is terrible now!!

  • bizzy4100 (Age 11) wrote on Monday, 6 February 2012 @ 18:22

We should definitely NOT have a longer school day as although you could argue that it would prepare us for a working life, us children NEED their childhood. Also, we would have less time to do even MORE homework, so we would never be a able to chill out. Anyway, we aren't getting paid to go to school, but adults get paid to work.

  • gizmo123 (Age 11) wrote on Monday, 6 February 2012 @ 18:25

No!!!!!!!!I think kids that want to stay behind after school should be allowed to.Most gangs are actually formed in school and pupils need sleep. If the day is longer than children will become more stressed and probably angry because of not much sleep. On a normal day I have quite a bit of homework to complete then have to have tea and go to bed.I only have an hour or so to myself.Overall I believe the school day should not be longer.

No way the average school day is already long enough streching to nearly 7 hours or more. Don't you think everyone needs a bit more social time instead of extra lessons!!! If they extend the day then there will be more lessons and therefore we will get tired and we will not be able to do what we want. All this will not encourage us to be social and therefore become more seperate from our families. If anything decrease the length of the school day slightly!!!!!!!!!

'No! We only go 'cause we have to. ;)' Correct. Mr. twigg, you've had YOUR childhood, now let us have ours. That's perfectly fair, innit?
