Should Mattel make a bald Barbie?
Campaigners are asking toymaker Mattel to make a bald Barbie to help cancer patients accept losing their hair
A Facebook group called 'Beautiful and Bald Barbie! Let's see if we can get it made' has been created to try and pressure toymakers Mattel into making a special bald Barbie.
Jane Bingham and Beckie Sypin said that they got the idea after a four-year-old cancer sufferer called Genesis Reyes said that she didn't 'feel like a princess' any more after her cancer treatment made all her hair fell out.
The parents of another child at the hospital heard and asked their friend who is the CEO of Mattel to make a special one-off bald Barbie for her.
Mrs Bingham said: "When I read the article about Mattel making a one of a kind bald Barbie for Genesis, I though how wonderful that would be, with so many other children dealing with hair-loss from chemo, aloepcia or trichotillomania.
"I thought we could raise awareness for these conditions. Raise awareness that children get cancer too.
"It would be a win all around."
Mrs Bingham once lost her hair due to cancer treatment, as did Mrs Sypin's 12-year-old daughter Kin.
Mrs Sypin added: "I know with a lot of the girls that we've met through treatment, the cancer part isn't the part that scares them, it's the fact that they're bald.
"The girls cry over losing their hair."
They said that the special bald Barbie doll could come with a set of headscraves and hats to make children feel better about covering their own hairloss.
