  • Neelam M (Age 16) wrote on Friday, 19 November 2010 @ 18:00

I don't think this is right but some people could then ask: Why do you eat turkey for Christmas? Its just peoples opinions.

That is horrible whatever happened to animal rights

  • Kate R (Age 15) wrote on Tuesday, 23 November 2010 @ 10:46

    | guess it's wrong really, but doesn't that make all animal killing for meat wrong? (eg. cows, lambs) Its really just the way the world works, predators and prey

  • Natasha D (Age 15) wrote on Tuesday, 23 November 2010 @ 11:25

It's just cruel!! Reindeer are magical to little kids, eg. Rudolf the red nosed Reindeer. I can't believe Lidl are selling it. They should be banned!! But then saying that, isn't it wrong to kill all animals for me at eg. sheep for lamb, cows for beef and pigs for pork!

  • Kiran U (Age 14) wrote on Tuesday, 23 November 2010 @ 11:26

That is horrible! If other animals are being killed to eat why can't reindeer? If they are becoming exstinct because of it (the same with any other animal) I think it's wrong and should be stopped!!!

  • Fe G (Age 15) wrote on Tuesday, 23 November 2010 @ 12:57

If you eat meat, then you are a carnivore or more probably an omnivore and you have made that choice! I don't see eating reindeer as being any different to eating any other animal. In places such as Norway, it is part of their staple diet and just because we don't readily have it and eat it here doesn't mean it's wrong. The Reindeer are farmed and killed humanely and are strictly monitored by the state authorities. They provide a living for their owners, the indigenous people in the Siberian Tundra, who have the same right as any other livestock farmer wishing to farm and provide for himself and his family.

I think it is stupid as people in the UK will never buy the meat as it is not the standard christmas meat as turkey and chicken and many other are.

  • Yingmin K (Age 15) wrote on Tuesday, 23 November 2010 @ 16:10

    That's really wrong!!! Poor Reindeers!!!

  • Tee W (Age 15) wrote on Tuesday, 23 November 2010 @ 18:11

I don't think that selling reindeer meat is appropriate, especially when it's so close to Christmas time!

  • Leena K (Age 14) wrote on Tuesday, 23 November 2010 @ 19:31

I definately think that they shouldn't kill reindeers, but just like what Katsrule said it's exactly like killing and eating lamb and beef. So if someone is allowed to kill and eat beef then they should be allowed to do the same to reindeers. But I would never ever eat reindeer. xx

  • Sakshi K (Age 14) wrote on Tuesday, 23 November 2010 @ 20:31

I totally agree with the fact that if you sell reindeer/kill it, it will destroy the happiness of Christmas!! I personally think that there should be NO "Reindeer killing" and saving it for enjoying in Christmas!!

  • Charlotte B (Age 15) wrote on Tuesday, 23 November 2010 @ 21:18

I don't think this should be allowed as it ruins the spirit of christmas and if small children saw it they woul be horrified!!!

  • Molly-Mae D (Age 15) wrote on Thursday, 6 January 2011 @ 13:51

Meat is Meat, So why the fuss? I mean, they eat it all the time in other countries, they are bred as a food herd. So It's NOT mean, OR cruel.

  • Rabia H (Age 14) wrote on Monday, 31 January 2011 @ 18:29

I have eaten deer meat before so I don't see what the problem is. What's the difference between a cow and a reindeer? It's a bit like horse meat. Why eat a cow but not a reindeer?

  • Becky B (Age 14) wrote on Friday, 18 February 2011 @ 14:38

That's so cruel! How could you eat a reindeer? and suppersuze, how can you especially eat a horse? BOO890

  • Nic W wrote on Friday, 18 February 2011 @ 14:46

Boo890 - I have approved your comment only to make a point here… Reindeer meat is the staple diet of many Scandinavian countries. It is no more cruel than beef, chicken, pork or horse. In fact, horse and reindeer meat is not battery farmed unlike chicken and pork, so in some ways is even less cruel.

  • Nic W wrote on Friday, 18 February 2011 @ 14:49

Everyone should try to remember that not every country traditionally had free access to beef, chicken and pork, so would eat the animals naturally found in their continent.

  • Nic W wrote on Friday, 18 February 2011 @ 14:52

I have eaten reindeer meat before - as well as snake, frog, rat, cricket, shark, ostrich and some other weird things! I haven't eaten horse, but I would try it. It used to be very popular in France. :)

  • Oliver N (Age 11) wrote on Monday, 21 February 2011 @ 18:08

Don't Worry. Some guys are a bit - disagreeable

  • Suzanne M (Age 15) wrote on Tuesday, 22 February 2011 @ 18:10

It's OK. :) I respect your opinion Boo890 and it's a good point, but I suppose that if your plane crashed and the only food to eat was reindeer, wouldn't you eat it? And horse meat is actually very nice if you forget that you're eating horse and just think of it as meat. I saw a programme where some people killed a whale, but they didn't have any other way of getting food. And you probably eat eggs from battery farmed hens, which I don't, so I could sort of call you cruel in a way too. It really depends on what you think is cruel. I just don't think killing reindeer and horses is any crueller than killing sheep and cows and other animals. :) x

Lidl's should not be allowed to sell reindeer meat because reindeers are lovely animals and nature and Lidl's do not have the right to harm them and kill them for food because we already have enough food to live. However if you were on the verge of dying then i suppose you would have to eat it if there was no other food to eat on the planet.

  • Ellie H (Age 13) wrote on Wednesday, 13 April 2011 @ 17:39

I 100% agree with Supersuze. My dad has eaten venison and my mum's friend has a business in which people eat rabbit venison and many other things. I don't really eat meat but I would try new things including meat. We eat sheep (shaun the sheep), cows, pigs(babe) and chickens (chicken run), what is the difference with reindeer? There is nothing uncommon about venison, it is considered a slightly upper class food compared to beef and chicken but there is no difference. Admittedly, eating reindeer at Christmas could be slightly off putting but it really is perfectly normal.:)

everybody listen. Reindeer and moose killing may sound bad however its not. I agree with SuperSuze. Moose and dear kill innocent people across scandinavia and it tastes a bit like turkey and pork. We eat turkey, pig, chicken and cow so its not that bad!!

  • Cerian R (Age 13) wrote on Tuesday, 2 August 2011 @ 17:06

I can see both sides to it. I think it is wrong because we have so many meat we don't need anymore, it reduces the amount of reindeer and i think only the people who have it in there diet should eat it. I think it is right if there are loads in the area because then it doesn't reduce big numbers, and because it doesn't hurt to try something new.

It is alright to eat the raindeer if you live near them for that is one of the main things in your diat and the number of raindeers are much higher. but lidl is doing wrong.

  • John K (Age 12) wrote on Sunday, 16 October 2011 @ 21:43

I suppose I look at it this way - if you eat meat, what's the difference between killing and eating a cow or a horse, or a Reindeer or a little fluffy bunny? I have never eaten meat, but my mum did until she was 14 and she remembers eating pidgeon pie....but she says that meat eaters are very strange, as they think killing and eating one animal is OK, but because we don't normally eat another type in this country it's seen as wrong!! All animals are the same, why should one animal be eaten but wrong to eat another one??!! Having said all that - the idea of selling Reindeer does seem very sad.....especially when it comes to Christmas and all the children are being taken to Santas' Grotto and to feed the Reindeer!! But....I think that when I go to a Farm Park!!!!

  • Alex T (Age 14) wrote on Sunday, 6 November 2011 @ 17:19

@Fizzee, I have to disagree with you there. When you said 'but like people say it is already dead and you cant bring it back to life so you might as well eat it.' No, that's not right, if you buy meat your supporting the meat trade which will thus get more animals killed, no you can't bring it back to life, but you can stop supporting the trade, which will save more animals lives. And it's also better for people in other countries, where maybe they go hungry every night. To quote Viva: 'While 750 million people go to bed hungry every night, one-third of the world’s grain is fed to farmed animals. A typical Western meat-based diet can only feed 2.5 billion people: a plant-based diet will feed every one of us.' So if people stopped supporting the meat trade by buying meat, the world would be a better place.

Reindeers are imaginary, so how can they even get the meet, by slaughtering a deer? anyway, it's cruel!

  • Rosie D (Age 16) wrote on Friday, 22 June 2012 @ 16:49

Ummm no webcam reindeer are real animals. Well, why not? I mean we eat cows and pigs, why not reindeer? I'd eat a horse if I was served it, so long as it had had a good life before it died, and they're one of my favourite animals.

  • Rosie D (Age 16) wrote on Friday, 22 June 2012 @ 17:00

There are, as we speak, several million chickens that are kept crammed in tiny cages under artificial lighting. They are only young and their bones are still weak, but the people who keep them feed them growth-boosting chemicals which make them so fat their leg bones snap. And if you buy any chicken meat which does not say 'organic', 'free-range' or 'RSPCA monitored' then this is where they have come from. And this probably won't stop for an awful long time, because people love the taste of chicken. Turkeys have it even worse, apparently. I have now refused to eat any chicken or turkey except Organic or Free Range, but whenever I see things like this I think of those poor birds. It is fine to eat animals. It is what lions, tigers, in fact every other carnivore on the planet does every day. It is is also a sad fact, a fact that many people prefer not to think about, is that herbivores were created to be eaten. It is the life they had before they died that counts.

We eat chicken and other things, so what's the difference. Sausages are always there on the shelves and little kids might think 'is that peppa pig?' and it goes on and on and on... In Sweden they eat it, I know because my dad has eaten it, and he said it is the same as eating rabbit or lamb. I don't see what much of a difference it is. Also, there is no evidence to prove that it isn't even reindeer. It could be beef, because seaweed is cabbage!

  • Leen R (Age 12) wrote on Saturday, 18 August 2012 @ 11:39

I think people should stop killing animals, it's cruel, and how would they like it if they were killed?

  • Eve K (Age 13) wrote on Sunday, 16 September 2012 @ 17:48

NO NO NO NO NO NO NO

  • Hriday M (Age 10) wrote on Sunday, 16 September 2012 @ 20:39

I think we all know the answer..... NO!!!! That is just terrible and horrific. Eating animals is cruel but delicious! But still its cruel and they should STOP killing cute, rare and beautiful creatures or animals!

  • Evie S (Age 10) wrote on Monday, 17 September 2012 @ 16:09

Just because they 'roam in their natural habitat' doesn't mean it makes a difference to their fate... I'm a vegetarian here you know! It will spoil the magic of Christmas as 2-4 year-olds will think it's Rudolph!

  • Rosie D (Age 16) wrote on Saturday, 22 September 2012 @ 10:47

Aqua4 and Almond; I see why you don't like this idea, but what is the difference between humans killing reindeer to eat and a pack of wolves killing a reindeer, as they do in the wild? Here is the difference; in the wild, a reindeer's life is a constant struggle for survival. As a calf is risks dying of cold or being taken by predators, and when it grows old, weak or injured it shall straggle along at the back of the herd growing weaker and weaker, until either the wolves or lynx kill it or it shall simply collapse and die. In human care however, they are fed every day, roam freely, and when they come of age instead of having a long, painful death in the snow they are simply put at rest quickly and painlessly at an abbatoir. I know this sounds harsh, but people have this romantic idea that wild animals live free, happy lives to do what they like. The sad fact is that nature is cruel; I live on a farm in the country and every year the wild birds have nests with chicks in the trees, and every year almost all the chicks die with just a few left over that survive. The deer on the mountains roam free; then when they get old their teeth get too long for their mouths and they are left behind by the herd until eventually, the crows find them. This is what nature is really like, I know because I have seen it happen myself, yet people are in uproar simply because the animal has been eaten at the end of a happy life free of suffering. As for Rudolph...do people not understand that reindeer are prey animals? In North America reindeer are known as caribou and are well known for being a large part of the grey wolf's diet.

HOW CRUEL! They shouldn't sell rudoulph and his friends, santa and me totally dissagree with lidl

  • Rosie D (Age 16) wrote on Friday, 28 September 2012 @ 11:21

So yes, I think Lidl should sell reindeer meat as long as the animal has been treated fairly and has had a good life, and I would certainly try it.

People eat pig(sausages, bacon) and cow(beef)so whats wrong? Its all in the food chain that was meant for Earth.

  • Lily W (Age 13) wrote on Sunday, 9 December 2012 @ 12:35

As a vegetarian too, it is interesting to see people get upset about a reindeer more than a pig or cow etc. I think meat free monday is a good idea and people should try to do it. Animal have rights!

  • Jacob T (Age 14) wrote on Monday, 7 January 2013 @ 18:52

I think it's just like selling other reindeer- like lamb and steak- if you're comfortable with eating chicken you should be comfortable eating reindeer. Besides I had a reindeer burger in Finland once, and I have to say- they're nice

  • Lottie O (Age 11) wrote on Friday, 18 January 2013 @ 07:55

Reindeer are not ours to kill their Mother natures

  • Tia N (Age 13) wrote on Sunday, 3 February 2013 @ 17:43

I guess we do need to eat so why not? It's unusual but you never know that it might be delicious... As long as Lidl don't go crazy and drive reindeer to extinction!!!

  • Lucy S (Age 13) wrote on Tuesday, 12 February 2013 @ 18:04

Bunnycat your comments are amazing and have actually changed my views on eating meat!! I TOTALLY agree with everything you say!

  • Saleka N (Age 13) wrote on Wednesday, 13 February 2013 @ 11:59

This is really wrong. Killing the xmas spirit by selling dead reindeer meat. WAKE UP LIDL!!!!!!!!!.

  • Bessie E (Age 12) wrote on Wednesday, 20 February 2013 @ 19:07

What about eating the 'Easter bunny'? I was once offered rabbit brains on toast :& I think eating reindeer is just as bad as any other meat.... Maybe just put it on the higher shelves so the children won't be able to see it.

  • Anandita K (Age 14) wrote on Friday, 22 February 2013 @ 18:30

If you are a meat-eater, then you should be open to the idea of eating all species. If we fed reindeer meat to babies, by the time they are adults they will consider it as 'normal'. I think it is all down to human psychology.

  • Jessica W (Age 12) wrote on Saturday, 9 March 2013 @ 08:30

They can do whatever they want but I would not buy it!!! (mainly cause it ruins the magic reindeer part of xmas)
