One day the stuff that makes your pillow could feed millions of people

Scientists from Texas A&M University have invented edible cotton which could feed millions of people.

Cotton is really rich in protein – something which helps your body stay strong and build muscle. However, cotton seeds contain a poisonous chemical called gossypol. Only cows can eat it because they have four stomachs which break down the poison.

The scientists used genetic engineering to create cotton which doesn’t have this poison.

“Farmers will now be able to use the cotton fibres for textiles and also the cottonseed for food,” says researcher Dr Keerti Rathor, adding that enough cotton is grown worldwide to feed 500million people a year.
