School uses pedal power to turn unwanted fruit into smoothies

A school has been using pedal power to turn unwanted fruit into delicious smoothies!

East Sheen Primary are the first school to try the Taste not Waste programme. It involves collecting unwanted fruit from local supermarkets and cafes and turning it into smoothies using a bike-powered blender!

The progamme was set up by School Food Matters and smoothie-maker innocent, who provided the bike.

Local MP, Zac Goldsmith, was there to help out with the pedalling. He said: “I celebrate any programme that highlights the level of food waste that happens in this country.”

The project is hoping to promote healthy eating as well as reducing food waste. In the UK alone, around 11 million tonnes of food and drink is thrown away each year from homes and from suppliers. A third of that – more than three and a half million tonnes – is fruit and veg.

After an eight week trial at East Sheen Primary, the Taste not Waste programme will be set up in other schools across the UK early next year.
