School discovers the importance of a balanced breakfast

School finds that a healthy breakfast is a great way to start the day. By Ellie Krefting, Year 3/4, Englefield CE Primary School, Berkshire

Last week was Farmhouse Breakfast Week.

Lots of events took place over the whole country to tell everyone why breakfast is so important. Years 3 and 4 in our school took part in a Farmhouse Breakfast workshop. We were told that a healthy breakfast can give you more energy, better concentration and even put you in a better mood.

We started by preparing fresh fruit smoothies and porridge made with oats, milk and honey.

It all tasted delicious. Then we did some egg and spoon races and sack hopping to see if our energy levels had gone up, and they had!

Once we had burned some of our energy, we were introduced to a surprise visitor:  a cow called Buttercup.  She wasn’t real, but we all had a go at milking her. It was tremendous fun.

Afterwards each of us planted a little container with barley, oats and wheat, to grow at home.
