Record 8.8 magnitude quake in Chile kills dozens
Saturday’s 8.8 magnitude quake in Chile was one of the most powerful on record
Saturday’s 8.8 magnitude quake was one of the most powerful ever recorded.
Hundreds of people are known to have died in the quake as strong aftershocks continued to hit the country.
Nearly two million buildings, like the one in our picture, were damaged.
The Save The Children charity are warning that hundreds of thousands of children could have been affected.
Matt Wingate, head of their Chile emergency team, said: “Children’s lives will have been turned upside down. They may be injured themselves, or will have to deal with the trauma of what they’ve been through, of seeing their homes destroyed or their parents or siblings killed or injured.
“Children are also likely to have been separated from their families in the chaos and will urgently need protection if they are trying to cope on their own.”
The Air Force has been flying in supplies to badly-hit areas, while the army and police have been trying to stop people stealing from damaged shops.
The earthquake struck in the middle of the night off the coast of Chile, triggering tsunami warnings in other countries in the Pacific, although the waves turned out not to be as bad as feared.
The earthquake in Chile was stronger than the one that hit Haiti in January. But Chile is a richer country and the emergency services were able to give help more quickly.
