Read the Piers Morgan interview with Hannah Montana star, Mitchel Musso
Mitchel Musso had a very busy year last year. He starred in two series of the Hannah Montana television series, as well as Hannah Montana: The Movie and still managed to find time to record an album.
We caught up with the Disney star to find out about the latest series of Hannah Montana and what Miley thought of his first album.
You’ve had a really crazy year filming two TV series, a movie and making an album. How did you fit it all in?
I split my day. A lot of the time I find myself doing TV stuff early in the morning and through the day and then I concentrate on music at night. I like to record music at night and I play shows at night.
What were you interested in first, acting or music?
I was a musician first. I started playing the grand piano when I was about six and I started recitals at about seven or eight. I got my first Gibson guitar when I was nine and my first drum master drum set when I was about 13.
So, when did you realise you could sing?
Truthfully, not really until this year. Before, it was more just about creating music using editing software. As soon as I turned 18, after we filmed season three of Hannah Montana, I thought: “Actually, I want to take a break from acting and focus on music stuff.” At the time, I wasn’t sure if that meant producing songs for artists or ending up making 50 songs and picking 12 for my
own album.
You co-wrote most of your songs. What things do you write about?
Really the album is about girls and partying. I don’t go to my guitar and write sad songs about “Ashley”, some girl who broke my heart three years ago or anything like that! The songs I write about girls are mostly about how I am moving forward. They’re not all about girls though, there’s a good mix with the party songs.
What’s your favourite track on the album and why?
I like Shout It, which is a song I recorded with my older brother Mason (who is in the band Metro Station). It actually went to number one in the US, so I was super stoked about that! Also I like Us Against The World. I think it’s my most edgy song to date. It’s kind of like MGMT meets Chris Brown and I think it’s a little bit more mature. But, all the songs on the album have a message that have been relevant at some point in my life and they are all very important to me.
Quite a lot of Disney stars can sing, act and dance. Can you dance too?
No, no, no, no! I do the foxtrot really well…I’m just kidding, I’m not a dancer. Although, I definitely rock out on stage a lot of the time.
Do you enjoy performing live then?
Yes, I love it. I just finished a tour of 67 cities in the US, which took about four months. I love performing, I love seeing peoples faces. I love the atmosphere in an arena but you can’t see everyone, so I also love intimate settings when I just get to play for people. I find that a little easier.
Has Miley heard your music? What did she think?
Of course! She was the second person I played it too. The first was my older brother. He critiqued it to the max but Miley was very kind and only had nice things to say about it.
Speaking of Miley, obviously you worked together on Hannah Montana: The Movie. How was it different to making the TV show?
It was different because we shoot the TV show inside on a stage and when we shot the movie it was outside. When you shoot a TV show there are four different camera shots, A, B, C, and D, so four camera angles for each scene.
When you’re shooting a movie we only had one camera but, then again, we had a helicopter camera and other equipment. And the TV show is always shot in front of a live audience, but we didn’t have that with the movie, so nobody laughs when you make a joke so you have no idea if it’s funny or not!
Hannah Montana is back for a new series. What is Oliver up to this time around?
I don’t want to spoil it so I won’t tell you. I can tell you it will be really exciting though!
