Read an interview about acting and aliens with Sky Runners star, Kelly Blatz
Aaron Stone star Kelly Blatz takes to the skies this week, in the Disney XD movie Skyrunners. Kelly stopped off in the UK to tell us all about it.
So, what is a skyrunner?
A skyrunner is someone who runs the sky. Basically, before a kid develops into a man, if he goes into outer space, he develops super powers. That’s what happens to the younger brother in the film, he has to take on the role of a skyrunner. I play the older brother so I don’t go into space, so I don’t get any powers.
What’s it like interacting with aliens that aren’t there?
It’s great because I work on the show Aaron Stone and we have a lot of special effects. Most of the stuff that happens on that show isn’t really there like gadgets, or lasers. I got to practise those skills on that show so it was easier for me. For Joey, who plays my brother, it was harder and I was able to help him. Disney did such a great job with special effects though. In the film it looks like we’re flying a spaceship, but really we were on a big stage all day in a fake UFO with all the crew around shouting things at us. It really teaches you to use your imagination.
Have you ever had any spooky encounters in real life? Do you believe
in aliens?
I believe there are other life forms. The galaxy is so big and I hope some day I can witness something. I would be really excited if I did – not if they came down and were attacking us, though!

Did you enjoy doing the stunts in
the film?
Yes, I did, because growing up I played football and baseball and was always active. So when they cast me, it just worked. They would say: ‘You’re going to have to skateboard today.’ And I was like ‘Yeah!’ It was great. And I had to train in martial arts, so I enjoyed every bit of it. But I also had a stunt double who did all the difficult bits and made me look good!
Have you ever had an injury while performing a stunt?
I’ve had a couple of small scrapes, but the safety team is fantastic and they make sure everyone is okay. But when you’re doing action scenes, of course you’re going to get bumps and bruises.
What’s the difference between making a movie and a TV series? And which one do you prefer?
They’re very different. With a movie you have a script and you have months to prepare so you can develop a character and you know exactly what’s going to happen. But with a TV show you get your script the week before, sometimes even the night before. So things are always changing. You have to always be on your toes! Both are exciting and luckily I’ve done a lot of training so I’m able to move quickly and always stay on top of things.
What’s the best thing about your job?
The best thing is that I do what I love to do. It’s so much fun that it doesn’t feel like a job at all. It’s a lot of work but it’s like being able to do anything – like riding a UFO! For me it’s like acting like a kid.
Do you get recognised a lot now that you’re a big Disney star?
It’s funny because I’m not really around kids too often as I work during the day. And when I get home from shooting I sort of forget I’m on the show because I don’t have a TV, which means I don’t watch Aaron Stone. So, months after I’ve finished shooting the programme, I’ll be out on the street and kids will recognise me. They’ll come up and be really excited and at first I’m always confused, but then I remember: “Oh yeah, I work on a big show!” It’s good that the kids are excited. When I was a kid I liked having someone to look up to.
So you don’t have a TV?
No, I don’t! It’s really hard to watch yourself on TV. Once I’ve shot my scenes, I don’t look back. It’s different with a movie, though.
I saw Skyrunners because I had worked so long on it and I wanted to see the overall thing. But with the show, there are so many episodes, it would be tough to watch
every one!
Catch Skyrunners on Disney XD, 12 February at 12pm.
