Pupil scoops gold award for World Maths Day challenge.

Pupil scoops gold award for World Maths Day challenge.

My school registered children to The World Maths Day 2010. The competition lasted two days, and parents and teachers who had registered logged on to the computer and played mental maths games.

by Jayshiv Patel, 7, Uxendon Manor Primary School, Harrow

There were five levels and each level had 100 games. Each game lasted 60 seconds. In one game you had to answer as many questions as you could.

If you got three questions wrong then that game finished. When you start the game, the computer searches for people around the whole world at the same level as you to compete with in your age group. Children were categorised according to their age: five to eight, nine to 13 and 14 to 18 years old.

I was very scared at the beginning because I had never typed so quickly before, but I got used to it. I  managed to reach level four and played 59 games. In total I had played 359 games. I thought that I would never win anything.

The next day I received a Gold award certificate at school as I had answered 8,797 correct questions out of 9,315. I got the highest mark out of the whole school. I was so delighted that I had achieved the Gold award certificate in school assembly.
