Public warned of the dangers of tombstoning

Young people are being warned not to take part in the latest craze for tombstoning during the summer holidays.

Tombstoning is when a person jumps off a cliff, pier or wall into the water below. But, without knowing how deep the water is and where rocks are, this is a very dangerous activity. Teenagers have been known to become paralysed when they’ve hit rocks just below the water.

PCSO Andrea Humphrey from Bridlington police station in East Yorkshire, says: “I have stopped people from as young as ten and even some adults jumping off the pier. They do not see the danger should they slip or jump in the wrong place.”
