Premier League could be using goal-line technology by 2012

The Premier League could be using goal-line technology at the start of the 2012/13 season.

The head of FIFA, the world governing body, has said that a decision will be made in March 2012 about whether the technology can be used in tournaments worldwide.

The Premier League has already said that the technology will be used as soon as it is given the go-ahead.

Football fans and players have been demanding the use of technology to clear up controversial goals for years, but FIFA has never allowed it. It is hoped that newer, better equipment could make the technology more efficient and more likely to be approved.

Frank Lampard’s disallowed goal for England in the 2010 World Cup helped to start the debate again, as the ball had clearly crossed the goal-line by some distance. FIFA later apologised for the poor decision.
