Orangutans learn to use iPads

Orangutans at a zoo in Milwaukee, USA, have been learning to use the iPad and experts think that one day they will be able to video chat with other orangutans.

The orangutans were shown iPads in May and were fascinated with them. Since then, they have enjoyed playing with them a couple of times a week, starting with simple apps like Doodle Buddy. They also watch short amounts of TV and video footage of other orangutans.

Conservationist Richard Zimmerman says: “The orangutans love seeing videos of themselves, so there is a little vanity going on, and they like seeing videos of the orangutans who are in the other end of the enclosure. So, if we incorporate cameras, they can watch each other.”

The researchers are just waiting to get hold of more iPads so they can try the research out on orangutans in other zoos.
