Orangutans in Indonesia may be eaten into extinction
A new study shows that orangutans in Indonesia may be eaten into extinction!
Every year hundreds of the apes are hunted illegally to stop them destroying crops but, shockingly, also for their meat.
A new survey of 7,000 villagers suggests that between 750 and 1,790 endangered Bornean orangutans are killed every year in the area of Kalimantan. This huge amount is serious enough to risk the entire species.
Experts hope that they will be able to help re-educate the local people to stop them killing orangutans.
There are two species of orangutan, the Sumatran orangutan and the Bornean orangutan. Both species are endangered.
