My weekend with Tin Tin
Me and my dad went to Brussels for the weekend. We went to find out about the history of Tintin and about Hergé, who created him.
First we had to go on the Eurostar, which was great and very fast. It took about two hours to get there. When we got to the station in Brussels, there were Tintin drawings on the walls, so we knew it was a big thing there.
A taxi took us to the hotel, where there were Tintin vases and even Tintin figures in the photo frames in our rooms. We went for lunch and, on the way, we looked in a few shops. It looked like cartoons and comics are a big thing in Brussels, and there were also a lot of chocolate shops, which I loved!
After lunch we went to the Hergé Museum. Hergé is the person who drew the Tintin comics. We were given an iPod with stories on, which were in English, and these told us about the history of Tintin as we walked around.
It was amazing because there were paintings and sketches everywhere that showed us how Tintin was created in black and white, then turned into colourful comics. We found out that Hergé based all the characters in the comics on people he met or saw in the streets and that it took him six years to colour the black and white comics he had already drawn.
I loved seeing the sketches because I really like drawing. The only thing I didn’t like was we were not allowed to take photos.
After the museum, we went out for dinner. Then me and my dad walked around the town square. The buildings are beautiful and must have taken forever to build, because the detail is amazing. There are also lots of illustrations in the shops and in adverts on the walls, which are cool.
The next day we had breakfast and then met a guide who took us on a walking trip around Brussels. He told us all about Hergé and other artists. As he took us around, he showed us huge Tintin pictures that had been painted on the sides of buildings. They looked really good and no-one had spoilt them by drawing over them. He told us people respected the pictures, so they would never ruin them.
As we walked around we also saw buildings and streets that Hergé drew in his comics.
After the walk we went to a comic strip museum. This was a little bit like the Hergé museum, but had a lot more artists’ work in it, so we got to see different styles. It had a cinema as well, which played an old black and white cartoon, but it was in French. We were allowed to take photos here, so I took a lot so I could copy the pictures when I got home.
When the tour had finished, we had a last look around the town and the shops before we had to catch the Eurostar home.
It was an amazing trip. I loved the drawings and I also loved the chocolate!
