Monkeys, chimps and apes love to laugh as much as humans do

Monkeys, chimps and apes like to laugh as much as humans do, according to new research

According to the study, chimps, gorillas, orangutans and bonobos all enjoy a good giggle. Different species of ape laugh in different ways, according to primatologist Marina Davila Ross.

She said: “Orangutans produce a short laugh series of noisy calls.

Gorillas, chimps and bonobos produce a longer laugh series.”
Marina and her team from the University of Portsmouth studied recordings of 22 young apes and three human babies. They analysed over 800 recordings of laughing noises before coming to their conclusion.
“It’s amazing to see a young gorilla laugh,” concludes Marina.

The research suggests that the ancient ancestors of humans and apes could also laugh.
