Monkey jockeys ride giant guinea pigs

The squirrel monkeys in a Japanese zoo have picked up a strange habit - they like to ride the capybaras.

The squirrel monkeys and the capybaras - giant rodents from South America closely related to guinea pigs - are both from the same part of South America.

So they are housed together at Saitama Zoo in Japan.

In the wild they don't mix with each other. However, at the zoo, they get along very well.

Shortly after the keepers noticed the monkeys riding the capybabras, they saw that they were also grooming and even kissing them!

The capybaras at Saitama Zoo are already famous - to keep warm they enjoy hot baths and shower in their enclosure.
